Griffey Fails To Play Like Griffey

Associated Press

It was a very unGriffeylike performance.

After hitting 56 homers in the regular season - tied for the seventh-most in major league history - Ken Griffey Jr. was 0 for 4 and did not hit a ball out of the infield Wednesday night in Game 1 of the A.L. Division Series.

But Griffey was not alone. Seattle had only five hits off starter Mike Mussina and seven overall in a 9-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

“We need to put some men on base and that’s something we didn’t do today,” Griffey said.

In the 1995 A.L. Division Series against the New York Yankees, Griffey tied a major league record by hitting five homers in a single postseason series.

On Wednesday night, Griffey left one runner in scoring position and struck out on three pitches against reliever Armando Benitez.
