Eight Students Receive Math, Science Awards

Eight students who graduated last spring from Spokane-area high schools received the American Association of University Women’s annual math and science awards.

The AAUW presents the awards to encourage girls to study math and science, thereby expanding their career opportunities, said Marilyn Phalen, spokeswoman.

The eight, from a field of 16, were selected based on the number of related classes they had completed, their grade-point average, and how their college and career goals related to the discipline.

The students, their high schools and proposed college studies and goals are:

Allison Allbaugh, East Valley, equine stud-farm management at Lake Erie (N.Y.) College; her goal is to own a horse-breeding farm. Lisa Chasse, West Valley, biology at Washington State University; her goal is to research recombinant DNA technology. Michelle Hebner, Cheney, biology at WSU; her goal is to become a neurosurgeon. Sherri Larson, Deer Park, biology at the University of Washington; her goal is to become a neurosurgeon. Nicole Mauldin, Shadle Park, physics and astronomy at the University of Washington, and earn graduate degrees; her goal is to teach at the college level. Katherine Sluder, Lewis and Clark, nursing at Montana State University and graduate school to earn a nurse practitioner certification; her goal is to open a clinic in rural Montana. Katie Van Houten, Central Valley, pre-pharmacy classes at WSU; her goal is to become a pharmacist. Katie Watts, Ferris, attend Stanford University, followed by medical school; her goal is to become a pediatrician.

Daniel J. Beatty, a Post Falls resident and son of Fred and Cathy Beatty of Spokane, has enlisted in the Army’s Delayed Entry Program as a counterintelligence assistant and will depart for basic training next April.

Beatty, a 1993 Deer Park High School graduate, has enrolled in the G.I. Bill and qualifies for up to $15,403 toward full-time schooling.

Michelle Hache, daughter of Marlene Hache of Spokane, received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Jacksonville (Fla.) University. She was a member of the honorary dramatic fraternity Alpha Psi Omega and is listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.
