Glenn Alford, Idaho State University’s sports information director of 30 years, has requested, and been granted, a transfer to the university relations office.

Alford will remain in his current position while a replacement is selected.

He has worked for Idaho State since 1967. He previously was assistant sports information director at Stanford in 1963-64, then served in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1967. Alford is a 1963 graduate of Stanford.

St. Louis Cardinals draft pick Rick Ankiel won USA Baseball’s Amateur Junior Player of the Year award.

Ankiel, who was the 72nd pick in the 1997 amateur draft, was the 1997 USA Today High School Player of the Year, going 11-1 with an 0.46 ERA and 162 strikeouts in 74 innings.

Ken Whitaker played 442 holes of golf at Benvenue Country Club in Rocky Mount, N.C., breaking the Guinness Book of World Records’ 12-hour mark of 440.
