Review, Summit Will Help Cda School District Set Goals

The Coeur d’Alene School District will review its internal management and operations and then hold a public education summit to set goals for the district.

The two events are part of a long-range planning effort started by Superintendent David Rawls, the former Moses Lake, Wash., superintendent who began his Coeur d’Alene job this fall.

A team of nine administrators will spend three days in the district this month interviewing staff, observing procedures, and studying policies and financial data. They will then compile recommendations on how the district can improve its operations.

Rawls said he requested the review in response to a recurring message from staff and taxpayers to run the district like a business.

“This concept is fairly new to Idaho but has been used by many Washington superintendents to evaluate efficiency, effectiveness and economy of operations,” Rawls said.

The review team will include administrators from other Idaho school districts, including Post Falls Superintendent Dick Harris, who brought an outside team to Post Falls in November 1994 for a similar review.

The education summit will be Nov. 12 and 15. The purpose, district officials said, is to bring together all groups affected by education to identify top priorities and develop action plans to achieve them.

The six-hour summit will start at Lakes Middle School on the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 12. It will continue the morning of Saturday, Nov. 15. Anyone interested in attending is asked to contact the school district by Oct. 27 to receive background information.
