The original Lloyds marine insurers graded ships by letter and cargoes by number. If the ship was perfect, it was A. If the cargo was perfect, it was 1. Thus whatever was judged the very best came to be known as “A-1.”

Q. When did the Internet get started?

A. In 1969 the Defense Department contracted with Bolt Beranek & Newman to install the first Internet node at UCLA. Soon came three other university terminals. By 1975, about 100 such links were in place worldwide. Stated purpose: to create a communications network that couldn’t be utterly destroyed in a nuclear attack.

Those who study evolution say you’re more closely related to the African monkey than the African monkey is to the South American monkey. Does it matter? Do you intend to leave them anything?
