A. In 1969 the Defense Department contracted with Bolt Beranek & Newman to install the first Internet node at UCLA. Soon came three other university terminals. By 1975, about 100 such links were in place worldwide. Stated purpose: to create a communications network that couldn’t be utterly destroyed in a nuclear attack.
