Students Participate In Summer Engineering, Math, Science Workshop
Local high school juniors recently attended the Idaho Junior Engineering, Math and Science (JEMS) summer workshop at the University of Idaho College of Engineering.
Students attending this year’s session are:
Ramon Burin, Bonners Ferry; Andrea Stranger and Nick Whtesel, both of Coeur d’Alene; Jerry Bennett, Genesee; Justin Daily, Harrison; Doug Welling, Hayden; Hayden Melbourn, Hayden Lake; Andy Dawes, Moscow; Frank Puyleart, Naples; Paul Vannoy, Osburn; Matt Reeves, Plummer; Matt Whitacre, Potlatch; and Jenny Bymaster, Katie Dalessio and Natalie Ward, all of Sandpoint.
The workshop introduces students to engineering and computer science fields, projects and career possibilities and gives them a firsthand look at campus life.
Students earn two college credits for completing the workshop, which includes courses about engineering design, computer-aided design, human factors and leadership training.
The University of Idaho College of Agriculture recently honored local students for outstanding achievements both during the academic year and throughout their college careers. Students are listed with their hometown, major and award.
Amy J. Watts, Coeur d’Alene, a foods and nutrition-consumer foods option major and daughter of Joseph and Sandra Watts, received the Upsilon Omicron outstanding senior award.
Virginia Boes, Hayden Lake, a foods and nutrition-dietetics option major and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Boes, received the Alpha Zeta Book Scholarship Award.
Marci Schrieber, Kellogg, a child development and family relations major and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Schrieber, received the Phi Upsilon Omicron Outstanding Member Award.
Shaney L. Rockefeller, Lenore, a soil science major, whose parents are Marvin and Linda Rockefeller, received the Outstanding Graduate Student Award.
And Jack H. Millstein, Santa, a microbiology major and son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Millstein, received the IMAGE Biotechnology Award.
The University of Idaho chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the political science honorary society has honored local political science major students for academic achievement. Students and their hometowns are listed:
Brian Fendos, a senior and son of Stephen and Donna Fendos, Bonners Ferry. Sarah Quade, a junior and daughter of Lee Quade and Karen Wagler, Coeur d’Alene. Catherine Mabbutt, a senior; Shea Meehan, a master’s degree candidate; and Dawn Messer, a senior and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Beaver, Moscow. Shelby Kerns, a senior and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Kerns, Potlatch.
Alexander Wolfe, a third-grader at Sagle Elementary School near Sandpoint, has won the First Place Award in the American Automobile Association’s (AAA) annual National School Traffic Safety Poster Program.
Wolfe’s poster, “Have Fun But Don’t Run Across a Busy Street,” was judged against other third-graders nationally and earned him $150 in U.S. Savings Bonds and a large plaque.
His art instructor, Larry Wolfe, who is also his father, received a Certificate of Achievement plaque from AAA.
Marilyn Bowles, a Coeur d’Alene artist, recently placed in the top ten with a painting in the 1998 Wyoming Conservation Stamp Art competition and brought home an honorable mention. The contest subject was trumpeter swans.
Bowles, who has placed in the Top 40 group the three previous years she has entered, was one of 277 entrants.
The winning painting appears on the Wyoming Fish and Game 1998 Conservation Stamp.
Wes Hanson, a Lakeland High School English teacher, was selected to attend the National Endowment for the Humanities summer seminar at Gonzaga University.
The session will examine the journals of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.
Bob McIlvenna, a local artist, had a 12-inch by 24-inch acrylic, “Mission Bay,” chosen for the Sacramento Fine Arts Center Inc.’s 10th International Open Exhibition, a juried show.
Oak framing was done by Frame and Easel of Coeur d’Alene.
Lorna Corathers, a Coeur d’Alene artist, has had a watercolor painting accepted in the Montana Watercolor Society Show for a national juried exhibition, “Water Media 97,” in Kalispell, Mont.
Corathers, former president of the Coeur d’Alene Art Association who has studied at the Denver Art Students League, also had an oil painting accepted at a second national juried art exhibition for McKenzie’s Centerway Gallery Show in Corning, N.Y.
She has membership and paintings in Riverbend Gallery in Post Falls, Art Echoes Gallery in Spokane, Colburns Gallery in Spokane, and The Panache Gallery in Colorado.
