Arlington Closing
Bowing to competition from riverboat gambling casinos, Arlington International Racecourse, home of the Arlington Million, announced Monday it will shut down next month after completing its racing season.
Owner Richard Duchossois left open the door to some day resuming racing at the track 25 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, but said it won’t happen next year.
Arlington’s problems are not unique. Several thoroughbred tracks across the country have been squeezed by competition from riverboats, Indian casinos and lotteries.
