Radke’s 10 Innings Good For 20th Win

Associated Press

Brad Radke got his 20th win with a complete game Sunday as Paul Molitor’s RBI triple in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Minnesota Twins a 2-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Radke (20-9) became the first Twins pitcher to win 20 games since Scott Erickson in 1991. He is the first Minnesota pitcher to go 10 innings since Jack Morris in Game 7 of the 1991 World Series against Atlanta.

The right-hander pitched a career-high 10 innings for his fourth complete game. He allowed one run and six hits with nine strikeouts. He didn’t give up a walk and went to three balls on just three hitters. He threw 128 pitches, 96 strikes.

In the 10th, Brent Brede singled with one out off Mike Fetters (1-5) and Molitor followed with a triple down the right-field line.

Angels 4, Rangers 1

Arlington, Texas

Anaheim kept its slim playoff hopes alive in completing a three-game sweep of Texas.

Tim Salmon’s RBI groundout in the seventh broke a tie as the Angels improved to 7-1 against the Rangers this year.

Tony Phillips singled to start the seventh against Roger Pavlik (3-5) and moved to third on Garret Anderson’s single off Scott Bailes. Danny Patterson came on to face Salmon, who entered the game hitting .418 against the Rangers.

Yankees 5, Jays 4 (10)

New York

Cecil Fielder hit his 300th career home run and Tino Martinez hit a game-winning homer in the 10th for New York.

New York trailed 4-3 in the eighth before Fielder became the 76th player to reach 300 homers. Fielder, coming off a two-month layoff caused by a fractured thumb, connected off Ken Robinson for his first homer since July 5.

Then in the 10th, Martinez hit his 43rd of the season, a drive off Carlos Almanzer, who took the loss in his first major league decision.

Royals 1, Indians 0

Kansas City, Mo.

Rod Myers’ two-out RBI single in the ninth won it for Kansas City.

Yamil Benitez drew a leadoff walk in the ninth off Mike Jackson (2-5) and Mike Macfarlane sacrificed. Jose Offerman was intentionally walked and the Indians brought in left-hander Paul Assenmacher to face the left-handed hitting Myers, who hit a 2-0 pitch through the middle.

Kansas City’s Kevin Appier had 10 strikeouts and gave up four hits before Hipolito Pichardo relieved him to start the eighth. Appier struck out five consecutive batters in the second and third innings.

Tigers 11, Orioles 3

Baltimore

Damion Easley homered twice and drove in a career-high six runs for Detroit.

Easley’s two-run homer made it 5-0 in the third. He hit a three-run homer, his 22nd, that highlighted a six-run sixth for an 11-1 lead.

Red Sox 5, White Sox 2

Boston

In what could be his final at bat in Fenway Park for Boston, Mo Vaughn drew a leadoff walk to start a three-run eighth inning.

The former A.L. MVP, who has been critical of and criticized by Boston management during contract negotiations, has said he does not think he will be back next year.

After receiving a standing ovation from some of the crowd, Vaughn walked and was replaced by pinch-runner Shane Mack.

Clearing the bases

Minnesota’s Paul Molitor has 12 sacrifice flies, tying him with Tino Martinez of the Yankees for the league lead.
