Cone Impressive In 5-Inning Stint

Associated Press

David Cone no-hit Cleveland for five innings and Ivan Cruz hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the 10th inning as the New York Yankees beat the Indians 5-4 Thursday night at Jacobs Field.

Cone, who left with a 2-1 lead, came out of a game with a no-hitter for the second time in two years. In a dramatic comeback from surgery to remove an aneurysm from his right arm last year, Cone no-hit Oakland for seven innings on Sept. 2 and left after 85 pitches.

Blue Jays 4, Orioles 3

Toronto

Joe Carter became Toronto’s career leader with his 203rd homer as Toronto stopped Baltimore.

Carter, who had been tied with George Bell, connected off Mike Mussina (15-8) in the sixth inning. It was his 21st of the season, his first since Aug. 29.

White Sox 10, Twins 5

Chicago

Frank Thomas went 3 for 4 with his 35th homer and Magglio Ordonez hit a two-run homer as Chicago pounded Minnesota.

Albert Belle and Ray Durham each hit two-run doubles as the White Sox ended a three-game losing skid and snapped the Twins’ five-game winning streak.

Red Sox 3, Tigers 1

Detroit

Mo Vaughn hit his 35th homer and Steve Avery made his first start since Aug. 31 - triggering a $3.9 million option - as Boston beat Detroit.

Avery allowed two hits in five shutout innings, struck out three and walked two.

By reaching 18 starts, Avery prompted a clause in his contract granting a $3.9 million player option for 1998. He is just 6-7 with a 6.42 ERA this season.

Royals 2, Brewers 1

Milwaukee

Jeff King and Rod Myers drove in runs and rookie Glendon Rusch got his sixth victory as Kansas City edged Milwaukee.

Rusch (6-9), who had five straight no-decisions and had not won since beating Detroit on Aug. 15, allowed one run and four hits in 7-1/3 innings.

Rangers 8, Angels 5

Anaheim, Calif.

Lee Stevens homered twice for the second time in three games, and Rusty Greer and Juan Gonzalez also homered to power Texas past Anaheim.

Bobby Witt (12-12) won for the first time in seven starts since Aug. 12, allowing five runs and eight hits in 5-2/3 innings.

Clearing the bases

Chicago’s Frank Thomas has 1,261 hits, moving past Carlton Fisk into 10th place on the White Sox career list…. Cleveland’s Paul Assenmacher has not allowed a run in 11 outings in September. He has allowed only one earned run since June 16 (32-2/3 innings).
