Lakeland Ruins Homecoming For Coeur D’Alene Reese Picks Apart Defense, Passes For 3 Tds In 34-14 Win

Nice homecoming ceremony. Wrong guest.

The Lakeland Hawks scored one of their five touchdowns while Coeur d’Alene’s homecoming royalty was still taking a victory lap around Viking Field early in the third quarter. Ouch!

Lakeland quarterback Kurt Reese tossed three long touchdown passes as the Hawks trampled Coeur d’Alene 34-14 in non-league prep football Friday.

“We were really pumped up because it was their homecoming,” said Lakeland running back Jason Hindberg, who scored on a 43-yard punt return and a 48-yard reception. “We just wanted to get ‘em.”

The Hawks, who improved to 2-1-1, didn’t pass much, but they made sure their aerials counted. Reese was 7 of 10 for 201 yards.

“It’s tough when you give up those vertical (passes) like that,” said CdA first-year coach Shawn Amos, whose club dropped to 1-3. “We had the coverage, we just let guys go by us.”

It started early as Reese fired a 30-yard completion on the second play from scrimmage. He eventually scored on a 1-yard keeper.

Hindberg’s punt return extended the Hawks’ lead to 14-0 in the first quarter.

The Vikings responded with a 71-yard drive, capped by Pat Goodwin’s 1-yard plunge.

Seth Alderman intercepted a Reese pass to give CdA possession at Lakeland’s 14. One play later, Goodwin’s 10-yard TD sweep was erased due to a penalty.

Lakeland’s defense would hold and its offense scored immediately as Hindberg slipped behind the secondary for a 48-yard TD catch.

“That interception made me a little mad,” said Reese, who is being recruited by several Big Sky schools. “I was trying to ground the ball and their guy caught it.”

Reese connected with Taylor Skidmore on a 54-yard scoring play 2 minutes into the third quarter and Lakeland’s lead was 28-6.

Reese concluded his dissection of the defense with a quick flip to Dan Ross for a 68-yard pass-and-run late in the third quarter.

Goodwin, who gamely ran for 141 yards on 25 carries, bolted 48 yards for the game’s final score.

The Vikings unveiled their quarterback of the future, sophomore Ryan Holland, who was promoted from the junior varsity. Previous starter Andy Molenar moved to tight end.

Holland had a tough initiation, completing 5 of 14 passes with two interceptions.

“He’s definitely going to be the guy down the road, but I think by moving Andy to tight end and defensive end, it makes us a much better football team,” Amos said. “Ryan did some nice things.

“We made the decision (to change quarterbacks) last Sunday. To Andy’s credit, he responded with class.”

Molenar caught three passes for 45 yards.

Lakeland visits Priest River next week in a key Intermountain League game. Coeur d’Alene has a non-league date with Moscow.

“The things we’re working on in practice we’re getting better at,” Hawks coach Terry Kiefer said. “We’re executing better.”
