Skip Hicks scored four touchdowns to tie a school record and become UCLA’s career TD leader as the Bruins defeated the Wildcats at Pasadena, Calif.
Hicks scored on runs of 8 and 19 yards in the first quarter, and 4 and 3 yards in the third period to give him 13 touchdowns this year and 42 in his career.
The previous career TD leader was Gaston Green, who scored 40 touchdowns from 1984-87.
Hicks, who scored four touchdowns in a game for the fourth time, scored his third and fourth TDs in the opening 1:18 of the third quarter following a pair of Arizona fumbles to extend UCLA’s lead to 37-17.
The first came one play after Brendon Ayanbadejo sacked Keith Smith and forced a fumble that Larry Atkins recovered at the Arizona 12-yard line and returned to the 4.
Smith injured his right shoulder on the play and sat out the rest of the game, being replaced by freshman Ortege Jenkins.
Hicks rushed for 118 yards on 28 carries, Cade McNown completed 18 of 24 passes for 266 yards, and Jim McElroy had six catches for 128 yards for UCLA.
Canidate rushed for 129 yards on 15 carries and scored a touchdown.
Playing for the first time since demolishing Texas, 11th-ranked at the time, 66-3 on Sept. 13, the Bruins scored on their first four possessions to take a 20-0 lead before the game was 14 minutes old.
UCLA scored the first six times it had the ball at Texas.
