Sandpoint High had all it needed Tuesday, picking up its first Inland Empire victories against the Lake City Timberwolves.

The Bulldogs allowed only eight hits and held the T-Wolves to five runs in their doubleheader at Lake City, winning 9-2, 10-3.

Sandpoint improved to 5-2 overall, 2-0 in league. The T-Wolves fell to 2-2, 0-2.

In the opener, Sandpoint’s Jens Weiden stuck out eight.

Weiden, a junior, used his consistent fast ball to brush the corners, while his change-up and curve ball provided a reason for batters to keep guessing.

“In the beginning, I threw fast balls and the later innings I went to the change-up. The curve worked well, too,” Weiden said. “I was trying to keep them off balance and get them to hit ground balls. My defense did a great job.”

Sandpoint’s second-year coach Mike Givens said fielding the routine ground balls was the difference.

Senior first baseman Mikal Seucik led the offensive side with a 3-for-5 effort, including two doubles and three RBIs. Dustin Reichart hit 3 of 6 with a triple in the first inning

In the nightcap, LC scored the first run and held the Bulldogs to just two hits for the first two innings. But in the third, the Bulldogs jumped on LC’s pitching and took advantage of errors. Sophomore Josh Sears and freshman Matt Scott hit consecutive line drives to left field, cushioning a 9-1 lead.

Lake City showed some life in the sixth inning. Bill Rider started the T-Wolves with a deep double into the left-center gap. Two others duplicated the success, but the momentum was lost. Rider led the team with two doubles. The game was called following the sixth inning because of darkness.

Also in the IEL, Rob Crain and Vince Rossi hit back-to-back homers in the sixth as visiting Coeur d’Alene rallied past Post Falls 7-6.

Rossi added a two-run single in the fourth. Nic Ursillo had a solo homer for the losing Trojans in the first and an RBI single in the fourth.

Taylor Skidmore hit a one-out, solo homer in the seventh as Lakeland edged visiting St. Maries 3-2 in an Intermountain League game at Rathdrum.

Kurt Reese (3-0) struck out nine for the complete-game win. Reese’s career record is 24-0.

At Priest River, reliever Josh Yarno struck out seven and combined with two others on a twohitter as Moscow defeated the Spartans 8-4.

Moscow’s Jeremy Nielsen went 2 for 3. PR pitchers walked 10, including six by starter Clark Kawamoto (1-1).

The last Greater Spokane League baseball team to register its first league victory, Shadle Park, did so with emphasis Tuesday.

The Highlanders hit five home runs and had two pitchers combine on a one-hitter during a five-inning, 22-0 win at Gonzaga Prep (2-5 overall, 2-3 GSL).

Joey Bell hit two homers and drove in seven runs, and Chet Womach homered, scored four times and had four RBIs for Shadle (2-5, 1-4).
