Ten years ago: Louise Nevelson, the Russian-born sculptor who became one of the world’s best-known women artists, died in New York at the age of 88.

Five years ago: A federal jury in Los Angeles convicted two former police officers of violating the civil rights of beaten motorist Rodney King; two other officers were acquitted. The U.N. Security Council voted to tighten sanctions against Yugoslavia for its role in the Bosnian war. Turkish President Turgut Ozal died at age 66.

One year ago: House Speaker Newt Gingrich announced he would borrow $300,000 from retired Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole to pay a sanction imposed for violating House rules. Former Israeli president Chaim Herzog died in Tel Aviv at age 78.
