Eagles Sign Two For Basketball

Marco Quinto from Interlake High School in Bellevue, Wash., and Alex Carcamo from Santa Monica Junior College in California have signed letters of in tent to attend Eastern Washington University and play basketball this fall.

Quinto, a 6-foot-5 forward/guard, was a McDonald’s All-America nominee this year. He was selected as the Seattle Times and Eastside Journal 3A Kingco League Player of the Year.

Carcamo, a 6-foot-7 forward, led Santa Monica to a 56-11 record in his two seasons at the school. He is formerly an All-City and All-West Side selection at Hamilton High in Los Angeles. “We are losing two quality wing players to graduation in Karim Scott and Mike Lewis,” said Eagles coach Steve Aggers..

“Our desire was to sign a junior college player with maturity and game experience and then get a quality young player to grow in the program.”

Quinto averaged 21 points and eight rebounds per game as a senior after averaging 19 points and six rebounds as a junior. A four-year starter, this past year he shot 55 percent from the field and 87 percent from the line.

Carcamo averaged 19 points, nine rebounds and three steals per game as a sophomore this past season at Santa Monica.

GSL boys soccer

Gonzaga Prep maintained a one-game lead in Greater Spokane League boys soccer Monday with a 3-0 win over visiting Mt. Spokane.

Spencer Leonard got Prep (10-2, 5-0) started with a shot from 15 yards out off a pass from Jeff Dixson early in the first half. Prep’s Eric Allen and Nick Ascolese also scored. Mt. Spokane is (2-10, 1-4).

Ferris (8-4, 4-1) stayed a game back with a 3-1 win at Mead (8-4, 3-2) in a battle of second-place teams. Saxons midfielder Billy Sleeth had two second-half goals.

At University, Andy Sather led visiting Central Valley (5-7, 2-4) to a 4-1 victory over the Titanss (5-5, 2-3) with two second-half goals.

At Hart Field, Lewis and Clark’s Brad Mahar scored on a penalty kick late in the second half as Tigers (5-5, 2-3) escaped 1-0 over Rogers (2-10, 0-5).

Mahar’s goal was set up when a Roger’s defender took down John Harnetiaux in the goal box at the 69:00 mark.

Shadle Park (9-3, 4-2) scored two second-half goals for a 2-1 victory over visiting North Central (7-4, 3-2), which has dropped its last two matches after opening the GSL season with three wins.

Nathaniel Bowie celebrated his birthday with a header off a Chris Dyreson corner kick for the decisive goal at 71:00 mark.

College golf

Washington State is tied for seventh, 23 shots off the lead, after the first round of the Pacific-10 Conference Women’s Golf Tournament in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.

The 54-hole tournament runs through Wednesday.

The Cougars, ranked 43rd, are tied with No. 5 Stanford at 313. No. 3 Arizona, the defending champion, leads at 2-over 290.

Arizona sophomore Jenna Daniels leads with a women’s course record 3-under-par 69.

Jennifer Dodd led WSU with a 5-over 77. Other Cougars: Stefanie Coleman, 78; Kelly Wilson, 78; Angie Cates, 80 and Jenny Balou, 82.
