Baseball, Softball In Stretch

Next week is the final week of play for Inland Empire League baseball and softball teams, and there could be considerable jostling as final seeding for postseason tournaments is decided.

Under a system similar to basketball and volleyball, the league champs will play host to the final day of the regional tournaments. Finishing second is important, too, because the league runner-up will be the host team for at least one playoff game and could host others if the champ is eliminated.

The IEL will send just one team to state in both baseball and softball.

In baseball, Lewiston will likely capture the league title with Coeur d’Alene second, barring last-week surprises.

The race for the league title in softball couldn’t be tighter. CdA and Lewiston are 6-4 after splitting Tuesday. Lake City and Post Falls are 5-3.

A pair of next week’s doubleheaders could be critical. LC goes to CdA on Thursday and LC visits Post Falls on May 1.
