Lewis-Clark State Rips Gu
Lewis-Clark State pounded 24 hits, led by Toby Cheff’s 4-for-6 day, as the Warriors defeated Gonzaga University 20-6 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday at August/A.R.T. Stadium in Spokane.
Luke Gradishar was 3 for 3 for the losing Bulldogs (11-32). Teammates Adam Stokey, George Arnott and Ryan Burke had two hits apiece.
Winner John Ruiz of the Warriors (36-12) improved to 5-0 while GU’s Nick Hess (3-3) lasted three innings, giving up seven earned runs.
At Pasco, the Community Colleges of Spokane dropped a pair to Columbia Basin College 8-7, 10-4.
In the opener, CBC erased a 7-4 deficit with a four-run ninth inning. In the nightcap, the Hawks took a 4-0 lead after four innings.
Gavin Hare led CCS with three hits in the first game.
Softball
Whitworth College dropped a doubleheader to Eastern Oregon 9-4, 7-5 at Franklin Park.
Traci Moore took the loss for the Pirates (10-29) in the first game, allowing nine runs on 14 hits, striking out four and walking none.
Katie Carpenter suffered the second-game loss, giving up seven runs on nine hits.
Whitworth’s Katie Werner and Michelle Condon each had two hits in the opener. Both Carpenter and Moore had three in the nightcap.
Golf
Seattle senior Max McCain, tied for eighth at the Pacific-10 Championships at Orinda, Calif., leads the Washington State men’s golf team after shooting a 2-under-par 70 for a 54-hole total of 216.
The Cougars are tied for seventh with Oregon State. Host California leads behind individual leader Dan Arroya’s 8-under 208.
At Ogden, Utah, Caryn Sears of Gonzaga and Brooke Fallstrom and Brenda Hall of Eastern Washington finished 12-over-par and tied for 14th at the Mike Farrell Wildcat Invitational.
EWU was fourth with a two-day total of 640 for 48-over. Gonzaga was eighth.
Track and field
Sydney Edmunds of CCS scored a school-record 4,367 points to take second to Brooke Wilson of Clark (4,668) at the NWAACC Heptathlon/Decathlon Championships at Lane CC in Eugene, Ore.
