Howard Scott Colbert

Visitation for Howard N. Scott, 74, will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, and from 8 a.m. to noon Thursday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Scott, who was born in Miles, Wash., died Saturday.

He moved to Colbert in 1958 and worked for Kaiser Aluminum at the Mead plant, where he was a member of its safety board.

Mr. Scott and his wife owned and operated the Capital Tavern in Spokane for 28 years and the Thrifty Scotsman Drive-In in the Spokane Valley for 18 years before their retirement.

Through his businesses he sponsored several teams including men’s city modified baseball, darts, pool, bowling, volleyball, stock car racing and men’s slow pitch softball.

At one time he was a Spokane County sheriff’s reserve officer and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Eagles and Moose lodges, and the Walleye Club.

His wife of 50 years, Marilyn, died in 1996.

Survivors include his companion, Lois LaSalle; five daughters, Jeanne Abba of Hauser Lake, Idaho, Kathleen Kovis of Richland, Joan McCoury of Hayden Lake, Idaho, Karla Brown of Greenacres and Patricia Scott of Spokane; two sons, Howard Scott of Spokane and Darrell Scott of Clayton, Wash.; two sisters, Lorraine Koch of Bayview, Idaho, and Margaret Meyers of Black Diamond, Wash.; 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of Seven.

Angeline Palanuik Spokane

Funeral for Angeline Palanuik, 63, will be at 2 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Palanuik, who was born in Erskine, Minn., died Saturday.

She lived in Spokane for 45 years and was a homemaker.

Her husband of 40 years, Pete, died in 1992.

Survivors include six sons, Walter Palanuik of Springdale, Wash., Robert, Melvin, Donald, Duane and David Palanuik, all of Spokane; seven daughters, Irene Abell of Milton-Freewater, Ore., Darlene Zufelt of Elko, Nev., Betty Matlock, Bernice Fury, May Colvin, Shirley Petheram and Donna Cisney, all of Spokane; her father, Oscar Larson of Fertile, Minn.; three sisters, Shirley Bormes of San Diego, and Marion and Marie Swenson, both of Fertile; two brothers, David Larson of Alexander, Minn., and Gene Larson of Minneapolis; 41 grandchildren and 52 great-grandchildren.

Sandra Delger Spokane

Celebration of life for Sandra L. Delger, 47, will be at 4 p.m. today at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Delger, a 37-year resident of Spokane, died Friday from injuries she suffered in an automobile accident on the Maple Street Bridge.

She was born in Sandpoint, Idaho, and owned Coochees hair salon on Spokane’s South Hill.

Survivors include her fiance, Terry Herzog of Spokane; a son, Taylor Contos of Spokane; four sisters, Betty Ann Bricker and Linda Plaster, both of Sandpoint, Connie Rhodes of Spokane and Karen Stewart of Priest River, Idaho; and two brothers, Curtis Sturm of La Crosse, Wis., and Dan Savage of Priest River.

Arlyle Bergdoll Spokane

Graveside service for Arlyle M. Bergdoll, 96, is planned for 10 a.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bergdoll, who was born in Detroit, died Sunday.

She graduated from high school in Detroit and moved to Spokane in 1974.

Mrs. Bergdoll was a homemaker and a member of St. David’s Episcopal Church.

Her husband, Howard Bergdoll, died in 1982.

Survivors include two sons, Howard Bergdoll of Spokane and Robert Bergdoll of Oak Brook, Ill.; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. David’s Episcopal Church.

Thep Nguyen Spokane

Memorial Mass for Thep T. Nguyen, 81, will be at 7:30 p.m. today at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Nguyen, who was born in Vietnam, died Monday.

She worked for the French military and then for the Vietnamese military as a secretary.

Mrs. Nguyen retired in 1972 and moved to Spokane in 1985.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include five sons, Joseph Nguyen of Spokane and four others in Vietnam; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren in Spokane and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Vietnam.

Edwin Johnson Spokane

Memorial service for Edwin C. Johnson, 90, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Royal Park Care Center. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnson, a 43-year resident of Spokane, died Sunday.

He was born in Tonopah, Nev., and served with the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Johnson was a proprietor of Inland Sign Co. and also worked as an artist.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Masonic Order North Hill Lodge 210.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Elsie; a daughter, Alice Quinn of Veradale; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Verda Meyer Spokane

Memorial service for Verda Meyer, 80, was Monday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home.

Mrs. Meyer, who was born in a log cabin near Greenbush, Minn., died Friday.

She graduated from North Central High School and in 1939 married Harold Meyer in Spokane.

Mrs. Meyer was a homemaker and a 73-year Spokane resident.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Jon Meyer of Canby, Ore., and Larry Meyer of Priest River, Idaho; three daughters, Nancy Owens, Heidi Clarke and Marcy Majeski, all of Spokane; a sister, Pearl Ferguson of Bremerton; a brother, Carl Hagen of Oklahoma; 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mildred Van Curler Spokane

Service for Mildred Van Curler, 85, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Van Curler, who was born in Indian Prairie, Wash., died Friday.

She was an 85-year Spokane resident and was a homemaker.

Her husband, Laverne Van Curler, preceded her in death.

Survivors include three sons, Jerry Van Curler of Kulm, N.D., and Alan and James Van Curler, both of Spokane; a daughter, Evelyn Knudtson of Camano Island, Wash.; three sisters, Amy Woodhurst, Nina Bogart and Bernice Manning; 21 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Jon ‘Michael’ Edwards Spokane

Private service was held for Jon “Michael” Edwards.

Mr. Edwards, 55, died Friday.

He was born in Hyattsville, Md., and moved to Spokane in 1976.

Mr. Edwards was a diesel truck mechanic and worked for Andrews Equipment Service until taking early retirement in 1982.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; a son, Jon Edwards Jr. of Davidsonville, Md.; a daughter, Teresa MacDonald of Bowie, Md.; his mother, Irene Edwards of Windber, Pa.; two sisters, Beverly Cerulla of Windber and Lynette Camp of Aquasco, Md.; a brother, David Edwards of Montville, N.J.; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Spokane.

Wayne Belknap Valley, Wash.

Service for Wayne Orin Belknap, 83, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Valley Bible Church. Burial will follow at Chewelah (Wash.) Memorial Park. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Belknap, who was born in Kouterville, Idaho, died Monday.

He graduated in 1934 from Jenkins High School in Chewelah and worked as a dairy farmer and rancher in the Valley area.

Mr. Belknap served with the Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theatre and was wounded twice during the invasion of Iwo Jima, Japan. He was a decorated war veteran.

He served as a rural mail carrier in Valley for 27 years and retired in 1975.

Mr. Belknap was a past Valley School Board member, a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of the Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was also a member and Elder at Valley Bible Church.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, June; a son, Rusty Belknap of Valley; a sister, Peggy Rudebaugh of Chelan, Wash.; and three grandchildren.

Alvis Stubbe St. John, Wash.

Graveside service for Alvis H. Stubbe, 86, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime St. John resident, Mr. Stubbe died Sunday.

He graduated from St. John High School in 1929 and worked for various farmers and also on the family farm for several years.

In 1937 he married Edna Russett in Spokane, and they made their home in St. John.

He began working for Inland Empire Milling in St. John and retired in 1973 as feed mill operator.

Mr. Stubbe was a member of the St. John Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Douglas Stubbe of Colfax, Darrel Stubbe of St. John and Donald Stubbe of Lincoln, Del.; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John Emergency Medical Technicians or the St. John Clinic.

Leone Greenwood Spokane

Private service for Leone E. Greenwood, will be held at a later date. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Greenwood, a 50-year Spokane resident, died Thursday. She was 86.

Born and raised in Minot, N.D., Mrs. Greenwood moved to the Sandpoint area as a young adult.

She came to Spokane in the late 1940s and was a homemaker.

Her husband, Joseph Greenwood, died in 1972.

Survivors include two sons, Charles and Ernest Greenwood, both of Spokane.

Richard Bain Spokane

Private service for Richard B. “Dick” Bain, 69, will be held at a later date. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bain, who was born in Coeur d’Alene, died Saturday.

He served with the Air Force during World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. Bain worked as a bus driver.

He was a longtime Spokane-area resident and recently returned after moving to Arizona 12 years ago.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Myrtle; a son, Kenneth Bain of Spokane; four daughters, Mary Mitchell of Roseburg, Ore., Karen Erickson of Troy, Mont., Vickie Peterson of Spokane and Maureen Campbell of Bellingham; six sisters; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Madeline Breakfield St. Maries

Private service for Madeline Breakfield, 84, will be held at a later date. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Breakfield, who was born in Tacoma, died Tuesday.

She grew up in Colville, Wash., and graduated from high school there.

Mrs. Breakfield attended Schultz Beauty School in Spokane and then lived at Lake Washington.

In the late 1950s she moved to Tombstone, Ariz., and operated numerous businesses. In 1997 she moved to St. Maries.

Her husband, John, died in 1992.

Survivors include numerous cousins, including Bernadine Baltz of St. Maries, Roger St. George of Coeur d’Alene and Donald St. George of Fernwood, Idaho.

Paul Collett Spokane

Memorial service for Paul A. Collett, 88, will be held at a later date at the Moose Lodge 161 in Spokane. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Collett, who was born and raised in Decatur, Ill., died Thursday.

He worked as a sales representative for the Golden Grain Co. in San Francisco.

Mr. Collett had been a resident of Spokane for 57 years and was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Brotherhood of Friends.

His wife of 35 years, Flossie, died in 1973.

Survivors include two daughters, JoAnne Collett of Spokane and Elaine Collett of Alaska.
