Sudden Downpour Floods Streets In Cda

Heavy rain flooded city streets Friday afternoon as a summer squall moved through the area.

Police dispatchers received several calls from residents on the east side of the Lake City reporting that water was covering their street.

Ankle-deep water was reported in some areas around Coeur d’Alene by 6 p.m. Storm sewers were so swollen with runoff that manhole covers popped off in a few intersections.

Much of the rainfall pooled in intersections along Sherman and Front avenues. Water nearly covered the tires on small cars and flooded several yards near 17th Street and Front Avenue.

Water reportedly covered a stretch of Interstate 90 near the 15 Street exit, the Idaho State Police said.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch Friday afternoon for all of North Idaho. The watch was in effect until midnight.

Dispatchers also warned police officers of an urban flood watch in effect for much of the Coeur d’Alene area. Heavy rains, thunderstorms, hail and gusty winds were expected.
