Obituaries

Elizabeth Reilly Spokane

Funeral Mass for Elizabeth H. Reilly, 82, is scheduled for 1 p.m. today at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Reilly, who died Monday, was born in Butte, Mont.

She was a 63-year resident of Spokane and worked as a nurse.

Mrs. Reilly was a member of St. Anthony Parish, the Philomathea Club, the Golden Girls of the Sacred Heart, Sacred Heart School of Nursing Alumni, St. Ann’s Women’s Guild and the Valley Lady Lions.

Her husband, former Spokane County Sheriff William Reilly, died in 1995.

Survivors include two sons, Pat and Mike Reilly, both of Spokane; a daughter, Betti McKenna of Yakima; a brother, John O’Brien of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sisters, Frances Sullivan of Spokane and Marie MacLeod of St. Louis; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Sergio Allen Spokane

Visitation for Sergio Allen, 17, will be from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today at Millwood Presbyterian Church. Memorial service will follow at 7:30 p.m. at the West Valley High School football field. Ball and Dodd Funeral-South is in charge of arrangements.

Sergio, who was killed Monday in a boating accident on Lake Coeur d’Alene, was born in Long Beach, Calif.

He moved to Spokane two years ago from Chino, Calif., and was a student at West Valley High School.

Sergio was involved in football and basketball and competed in track as a hurdler.

Survivors include his mother, Linda Butler of Las Vegas; his father, David Allen of Los Angeles; three brothers, Roshon Thomas of Connell, Wash., Clifford Butler of Las Vegas and Rollin Phillips of San Bernadino, Calif.; his grandmothers, Emma Jones of Long Beach and Beulah Allen of Los Angeles; and the Spivey family, Dan, Melissa, Ryan and Rachael, all of Spokane.

Joseph Parkes Oldtown, Idaho

Graveside service for Joseph E. Parkes, 67, is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Dry Creek Cemetery near Troy, Idaho. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Parkes, who died Sunday, was born in Potlatch, Idaho.

He worked in the lumber industry for more than 40 years at Diamond DAW and retired as a scaler from Crown Pacific in 1995. He had lived the past 28 years in Oldtown, moving there from Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Parkes had spent two season in the Northwoods Performing Arts.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Marilyn; four daughters, Linda Stiner of Spokane, Diana and Connie Parkes, both of Oldtown, and Janna Winterfield of Newport; his mother, Ethel Whitcomb of Moscow, Idaho; a brother, Jim Parkes of Diamond Lake, Wash.; a sister, Sally Benson of Moscow; and three grandchildren.

Travis Allison Nine Mile Falls

Graveside service for Travis D. Allison, 15, is planned for 10 a.m. today at the Scottsvalley Cemetery in Tum Tum, Wash. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Travis, who was born in Hanford, Calif., and moved to Spokane as an infant, died Sunday.

He was a student at Lakeside High School and was a member of the jazz band.

Survivors include his parents, Tom and DeDe Allison; a sister, Tara Allison; and his grandparents, Don and Arleen Rainville of Nine Mile Falls and Pennie Allison of Selma, Calif.

Mildred Haight Spokane

Private service for Mildred J. Haight, 87, will be held at a later date. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Haight, who was born in Shattuck, Okla., died July 3.

She graduated in 1928 from the New Shattuck High School and then moved to Denver.

Mrs. Haight resided in Colorado until the mid 1940s, when she and her husband, Neal, moved to Washington state. They moved to Spokane in 1952 and she was a homemaker.

Her husband died in 1978.

She is survived by a son, Patrick Haight, and a daughter, Kelly Guinsler, both of Spokane; two sisters, Frances Wilson of Bremerton and Irene Lewis of Seattle; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Robert Kelly Spokane

Funeral Mass for Robert J. Kelly, 80, is set for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Private inurnment will be held. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kelly, who died Saturday, was a lifetime resident of Spokane.

He graduated from Gonzaga Prep, Kinman Business College and Spokane Community College.

Mr. Kelly served in the Army during World War II with military intelligence units in China and India.

He worked as a business manager in the plumbing industry. He was active in the Catholic community, and was a supporter of Gonzaga Prep and Gonzaga University, was a member and past president of the Gonzaga Booster Club, was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was active in the St. Charles Home and School Association as well as coaching at St. Charles.

Survivors include four sons, Daniel, Michael, Terry and Thomas Kelly, all of Spokane; a sister, Mary Baker of Modesto, Calif.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Charles Galles Spokane

Funeral for Charles H. Galles, 80, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery with full military honors. A private service was held Tuesday at Brick-Postlewaite Funeral Home in Owatonna, Minn.

Mr. Galles, who was born in Remson, Iowa, died Sunday while on vacation in Owatonna.

In 1945 he married Doris Hofer in Seattle. He served in the Navy for 20 years.

He retired in 1959 from the Navy and worked in civil service for 10 years. After that, he started his own business in refrigeration service.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Edward and Mike Galles, both of Spokane, and Roger Galles of Portland; three daughters, Pamela Drozdov and Deb Siegel, both of Spokane, and Bonita Galles of Seattle; a sister, Clara Risberg of Owatonna; four brothers, Lawrence Galles of Adrain, Minn., Eugene Galles of Devberry, Texas, Lester Galles of Little Falls, Minn., and Frances Galles of Preston, Minn.; and 11 grandchildren.

Sister Blanda Mueller Spokane

Vigil service for Sister Blanda Mueller, 92, is set for 7 p.m. today at the Dominican Center. Funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Dominican Center. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sister Blanda, a 61-year resident of Spokane, died Tuesday.

She was born in Harsberg, Germany.

In 1929 she entered the Dominican Community in Speyer, Germany, primarily helping in the kitchen.

Taking the opportunity of joining the sisters leaving for America in 1937, Sister Blanda spent many years in Helena as a cook. She served the priests, seminarians and students at Carroll College. She also cooked for the Native American children at St. Mary’s Mission in Omak, Wash.

Sister Blanda grew roses and had more than 100 bushes. She later served in the kitchen at Mount Carmel Hospital in Colville, Wash., Holy Family Hospital and the Dominican Center.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Annchen Mueller of Germany.

Andrew Birch Pullman

Funeral for Andrew Jackson Birch, 21, is set for 11 a.m. today at Pullman Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Birch, who was born in Moscow, Idaho, drowned Sunday at Spring Valley Reservoir near Troy, Idaho.

In 1996 he graduated from Pullman High School, where he was a member of the Future Problem Solvers team and participated in the Youth Bowling League in Pullman and the state welding competition.

Mr. Birch was a member of Boy Scout Troop 446 and had been a patrol leader. He had played on the Albion Little League Team.

He was a painter for Reasonable Painting and an apprentice electrician for Pullman Heating and Electric.

Mr. Birch was a member of Pullman 1st Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was a secretary to the deacon’s quorum and passed the sacrament at church. He was also a home teacher.

He was a member of the Pullman Moose Lodge and compiled a book of his own poetry.

Survivors include his parents, David and Doris Lohrey Birch of Albion, Wash.

Margaret Mead Spokane

Graveside service for Margaret Mead, 83, is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at Fairmount Memorial Park. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mead, who died Saturday, was a 16-year Spokane resident.

She was born in Germany and worked as a clerk for many years at Nordstrom in Seattle. Mrs. Mead was a member of the Million Dollar Club and received recognition for setting numerous sales records.

Survivors include her husband, Vaurice; two daughters, Judy Dodd of Spokane and Irene Nelson of Seattle; two brothers, Gustav and Hanz Renz, both of Darmstadt, Germany; a sister, Kate Truitt of Seattle; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Ned Kelly Spokane

No service will be held for Ned C. Kelly, 82, at his request. Private burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kelly, who died Tuesday, was a lifetime Spokane resident.

He worked as a bricklayer.

His wife, Edith, died in 1997.

Survivors include a son, James Kelly of Greensboro, N.C.; a daughter, Sandra Knight of Bellingham; two brothers, Joe Kelly of Spokane and James Kelly of Escondido, Calif.; two sisters, Nellie Dunn of Spokane and Mynie Wright of Mead; seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Helen (Austin) McKenney Spokane

Visitation for Helen J. (Austin) McKenney, 83, will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Funeral will follow at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Private inurnment will be held at a later date at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. McKenney died Sunday.

She worked as a billing clerk in the grocery industry.

She was a member of Eagles Lodge 2 and the Moose Lodge auxiliaries.

Survivors include two sons, Donald Ingalls and James McKenney; a daughter, Elaine Sanders; 13 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
