Celebrated author J.D. Salinger loved junk television but fought his battles with junk food, says his former mistress.
Writer Joyce Maynard had an affair with Salinger 26 years ago, when she was 18 and he was 53. Her upcoming memoir, “At Home in the World,” is excerpted in Vanity Fair.
The eccentric, reclusive Salinger was hooked on old sitcoms like “I Love Lucy” and “The Andy Griffith Show,” Maynard writes. “The worse the television - the more American - the more I love it,” he once told her.
On the other hand, he ate mostly raw food, practiced homeopathic medicine and was adept at bulimia. One day, she says, after eating pizza, “Jerry tells me how much he hates having all this garbage in his body,” took her in the bathroom and showed her how to purge.

Having lectured at Loyola Law School this spring about being a legal witness in the media spotlight, former O.J. Simpson pal Kato Kaelin is going on the college lecture circuit. “I get into the world of suing and being sued,” he told New York magazine. “I won’t tell you about the lawsuits, because I may get sued again.”
