Three Honored For Work With Explorer Program
Ryan Harris, Mike McNees and Mike Zollars were honored by the Optimist Club of the Spokane Valley during its annual Respect for Law Program.
Harris and McNees were cited for their many hours of community service through the Law Enforcement Explorer Program. Deputy Sheriff Zollars was recognized for his dedication and leadership of the Explorer Program.
Fifteen Spokane-area students received Presidential Scholarships at Carroll College in Helena, based on grades, extracurricular activities and entrance exam scores.

Two Spokane students received degrees from Portland State University. Daniel Lee Tower received a bachelor’s degree in computer science, and Daniel Albert Buller received a master’s degree in civil engineering.
Matt Whitford was selected as one of 180 musicians statewide to tour Europe this summer with the Washington Ambassadors of Music program.
The students were nominated by their band directors based on talent, leadership and character.
Whitford, who plays the trumpet, is a spring graduate of Rogers High School and the son of Steve and Laurie Whitford, Spokane.
Coleen P. Codd, daughter of Jac and Enid Charbonneau, Chewelah, Wash., received a nursing degree this spring from Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, Colo.
Codd, a member of Golden Key Honor Sorority, National Dean’s List and Phi Theta Kappa, earned the Arapahoe College President’s Award.
Army Spc. 4 Keith Sharp was promoted to his present rank while serving as a military police in Panama.
He is now stationed on Johnson Island, a remote man-made island 750 miles south of Hawaii.
Sharp, a 1994 graduate of East Valley High School, is the son of Gina and Roger Sharp, Otis Orchards.
Seven Spokane-area students were winners in the Washington State History Day contest, hosted by Central Washington University in Ellensburg.
Nearly 590 students from public, private, parochial and home schools in the state participated in the contest, with presentations on “Migration in History: People, Ideas, Cultures.”
Competition took place in two categories: the junior division of grades six through eight; and senior division, grades 9 through 12.
The students, their schools, placements, divisions and categories are:
Jamin Lowe, Mead Middle School, placed 10th in the Junior Individual Exhibit.
Ryan Yoke, Hawk Tomeo and Logan Foster, Northwood Middle School, took 12th in the Junior Group, Exhibit.
Emily Caster, Northwood Middle School, placed eighth in the Junior Individual, Media Presentation.
Margaret Hall, Northwood Middle School, placed fourth in the Junior Group, Historical Paper.
Kimberly Sackmann, Mt. Spokane High School, took sixth in the Senior Individual, Performance.
Jenni Streibick, an accounting major at The University of Montana in Missoula, has been selected as an academic peer advisor.
The advisors, chosen for exceptional leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, are responsible for advising fellow students at the college.
Streibick is the daughter of Doug and Chris Banks, Spokane.
Kory Buglione, Spokane, a master’s candidate in science at Oregon State University in Corvallis, received a William F. Burger Graduate Teaching Award.
