Spartans Run Past Knights
The Priest River Spartans scored a pair of first-quarter touchdowns en route to a 20-12 season-opening non-league football victory Saturday over the Lakeside Knights in Plummer.
Ryan Redinger and Derek Kuchery scored on runs of 1 and 16 yards, respectively, to stake the Spartans to an early lead.
Brandon Pluff connected with Jeremy Howard on a 75-yard touchdown pass to pull the Knights to within 14-6 in the third quarter.
Priest River answered with a 13-yard touchdown run by Jason Pearsall. Pearsall finished with a team-high 62 yards rushing.
Pluff teamed with Howard on a 53-yard pass in the fourth quarter for the game’s final touchdown.
Howard finished with 58 yards rushing and 128 yards receiving.
High school soccer
Ian Leibbrandt booted three goals to lead the Moscow Bears to a 6-1 victory over the visiting Bonners Ferry Badgers.
Jared Vreeland gave Moscow a 1-0 lead on a penalty-kick goal at the 14-minute mark. Back-to-back goals by Leibbrandt stretched the lead to 3-0 at the half.
Leibbrandt, Philipp Budzinski and Ben Graham all added second-half goals for the Bears.
High school volleyball
Janelle Ruen finished with 11 blocks to lead the Post Falls Trojans to a pair of wins at a tri-match in Priest River.
Priest River edged the Lakeland Hawks 14-16, 15-12, 17-15 in the opener.
Post Falls defeated the Hawks 15-12, 9-15, 15-11 in the middle match and knocked off Priest River 15-6, 15-13 in the finale.
Anika Duvall had 23 assists and Megan Egbert totaled 17 blocks on the day for Lakeland.
College volleyball
Salt Lake Community College swept North Idaho College 15-5, 15-13, 15-9 at the Utah Valley Invitational in Orem, Utah.
Lindsay Baines paced NIC (6-3) with 10 kills and 15 digs. Teammate Kimmi Towery tallied 28 assists.
