School Split Postpones Drug Testing Proposal

From Staff

A proposal to start drug testing of athletes at Sandpoint High School has been postponed.

Dozens of government students attended the Bonner County school board meeting Tuesday night to debate the issue of drug testing.

The board decided to table the issue until more study could be done, but still took testimony, according to Superintendent Roy Rummler.

The subject may be on the board’s January agenda, but now that the district is going to be split in two, the decision may be postponed until the division is complete, school officials said.

Now, only athletes at Priest River Lamanna High School are subjected to random drug testing. School officials there say the program has been successful in curbing drug use by students.

Some critics are opposed to the program because they see it as a violation of privacy.
