CV Halts Ferris Boast Paces Bears’ Victory
Central Valley has several things to boast about now, not the least of which is Kyle.
The Bears, behind a couple of key 3-pointers from Kyle Boast, defeated Ferris 48-40 Tuesday night in a battle of unbeaten Greater Spokane League boys basketball teams at Ferris.
Boast hit two 3-point baskets in the third quarter to hold off a Saxons surge and then combined with Craig Eigenhuis to hit 7 of 8 free throws in the final 2 minutes to secure the win.
“We worked the ball inside out and the shots just came,” said Boast, who had a game-high 15 points. “We played good defense and hit the outside shot.”
The outside shot was important. CV hit 6 of 15 3s to just 3 of 17 for Ferris.
“We knew it was a big game,” Boast said. “We learned we’re a good team and we can hang with any team in the league.
The Bears (4-0 overall, 2-0 in the GSL), were picked fourth in a tight group at the top, while Ferris (3-1, 1-1) was the favorite.
“CV played good, aggressive defense and we didn’t respond,” Ferris coach Wayne Gilman said. “They took us out of our game a little bit.”
Besides struggling from 3-point range, Ferris rushed shots while trying to quickly make up a deficit, even though the Saxons never trailed by more than eight points.
The Bears were only up 40-33 with 3-1/2 minutes to go when they took the air out of the ball and forced Ferris to foul.
“We’ve played really good defense all year,” CV coach Rick Sloan said. “This is a pretty good bunch of athletes who understand the game. They understood what can beat us and they defended that. We had to limit their inside game.”
That worked, and when the Saxons couldn’t get the outside shot to fall, they were in trouble because the Bears waited for the open shot and then pounded the boards when they missed.
“Ferris plays good defense, so you have to be willing to be patient on offense and make the extra pass or two,” Sloan said.
The game was tied at 6 when Boast hit a 3 from the right wing and Eigenhuis made a jumper from the right of the lane to give the Bears an 11-6 lead after one quarter.
Each time Ferris challenged, the Bears had an answer.
CV led 25-19 at the half, but a six-point run pulled the Saxons within 28-26 early in the third quarter. That’s when Boast hit his third 3. Ferris was within 33-30 when Jake Hebden banked in a buzzer-beater to make it 36-30 at the end of three quarters.
