Two New Peace Corps Members From Spokane

Compiled By Lori Derryberry

Two Spokane-area residents have enlisted for two-year assignments with the Peace Corps.

Robert Hager has been assigned to Tanzania, Africa.

Hager is the former owner of Paradigm Technologies, a research and development company, and a math and physics instructor at Spokane Community College and ITT Technical Institute.

While in Tanzania, he will teach physics to high school and junior college students.

Sheila Maak is in Honduras as an economic developer. She will help identify successful business ventures, design marketable products, select and train managers, and form a chapter of Junior Achievement.

Maak, daughter of Leo and Barbara Maak, Greenacres, is a graduate in business and Spanish from Whitworth College.

Mary Averett has been named dean of instruction and district director of business and industry education for the Institute for Extended Learning with Community Colleges of Spokane.

Her responsibilities include IEL’s employment and retraining contract services, international trade education, continuing professional education programs, computer training programs and the Small Business Development Center.

Sharon Fosseen has been appointed as development director for the Foundation Northwest, The Community Foundation. She previously held a similar position at St. George’s School. The foundation’s purpose is to improve the quality of life in the Inland Northwest.

Charles Argersinger, a faculty member at Washington State University, was named Composer of the Year for 1997 by the Washington State Music Teachers Association.

Last fall, the association commissioned him to compose “Dream Sequence,” a major work for solo piano.

Neal Fosseen, civic activist and former Spokane mayor, received Community Colleges of Spokane’s Distinguished Service Award for his work in support of the community colleges. It’s the highest honor given by the local community colleges.

Fosseen, 89, serves on the CCS Foundation board. He and his wife, Helen, established a second charitable remainder annuity trust through the foundation, retaining income for life while benefiting future CCS programs.
