Pat Knight, son of Indiana coach Bob Knight, has been hired as coach of the Columbus Cagerz, who begin play in the United States Basketball League this summer. … Eddie Pope, a defender on the U.S. national team and D.C. United, has been named 1997 Honda soccer player of the year….

Utah State running back Demario Brown has been sentenced to two years’ probation for assaulting another student last summer. … Suspects Marty Graber and Shaun Patrick Dickson turned themselves in to College Park, Md., police and were charged in connection with the stabbing of two University of Maryland lacrosse players, Brian Reese and Adam Lodewick early Sunday morning.
