Democrat Challenges Lance

Associated Press

Lincoln County Prosecutor Brit Groom launched his Democratic campaign for attorney general by vowing to listen to, understand and meet the needs of counties and other local governments.

“When we, as elected officials, improve the quality of service that we provide to our constituencies, we truly improve their quality of life,” Groom said Thursday at the Idaho Association of Counties building.

He is a Twin Falls attorney and also is the part-time prosecutor for Lincoln County. The Grangeville-area native, Navy veteran and University of Idaho graduate so far faces no opposition for his party’s nomination to run against Republican Attorney General Al Lance in the November election.

Groom focused his comments on working with counties in the wake of Lance’s high-profile 1996 dispute with former Minidoka County Prosecutor Gara Newman over prosecution of three accused killers.

The Idaho Supreme Court ruled that Lance had no authority to take the cases away from Newman.
