Chenoweth Urged To Keep Promise

Associated Press

Despite having repeatedly restated her pledge that this is her final congressional campaign, Republican Rep. Helen Chenoweth is being asked by a national group to renew her term limits pledge.

“We don’t have any indication whatsoever that she is not going to abide,” said U.S. Term Limits Director Paul Jacob, who wrote to the Republican to seek her assurances that she will retire from office in 2000. “We just want to make certain she reiterates that this is her last campaign and her last term.”

In public appearances over the past four months, Chenoweth has stated at least six times that she intends to serve no more than three terms, as she promised during her initial congressional campaign in 1994.
