Eagles Win 15th Straight

Lakeside’s 1-2 punch materialized Friday to assure the second-ranked Eagles of an opening-round bye to the District 7-2A tournament.

Brianne Jolley totaled 21 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals as the visiting Eagles (16-1, 11-0) defeated sixth-ranked Newport 77-61 in the Great Northern League. Lakeside’s Nikki Petticrew added 20 points, 11 in the third quarter.

Lakeside, winner of 15 straight, can finish no worse than second place in the GNL. The top two receive first-round byes at district.

Newport’s Carey Sauer scored 11 of her 25 in the third quarter, and added 11 rebounds and five assists. The Grizzlies’ Mary Lindburg scored 20.

Abbey Wood scored four in the overtime and had 10 rebounds, and Bernice Stime added nine assists as the fifth-ranked Rams (14-2, 10-1) outlasted the host Greyhounds (8-9, 4-7).

Pullman’s forced OT on Wendy Paulson’s 3-pointer with 2 seconds left. The Greyhounds played OT without year-long leading scorer Christa Brossman, who rolled her ankle late in regulation.

Colville made a run in the fourth quarter, with Melissa Wollan and Kristin Cornwell combining for 13 points.

Heather Wilkerson totaled 11 rebounds for Freeman, which hit 18 of 34 from the floor in the final three quarters after starting 2 of 16.
