Highway 21 Open After Avalanches

Idaho Highway 21 between Grandjean Junction and Banner Summit was reopened Friday after being closed for six weeks by avalanches.

The Idaho Transportation Department said motorists should drive carefully along the reopened section of the central Idaho highway because it had icy spots and a broken snow floor Friday.

Maintenance crews will continue monitoring avalanche conditions in the area.

The crews had been working to clear the highway from both ends since Jan. 2

Fifty-four avalanche chutes along a nine-mile section of the highway called Canyon Creek experience about 90 percent of the avalanches in Idaho, the Transportation Department said.
