Vikings Capture Border Cda Holds Off Rival Lc To Win League, Tune Up For A-1 Region I Tournament

The A-1 Region I boys basketball tournament doesn’t begin until Wednesday, but hors d’oeuvres were served Friday at Viking Gym.

In a tournament teaser, Coeur d’Alene captured the Border League championship outright. But the Vikings had to hold off upset-minded Lake City 61-56 before a vociferous, standing-room-only crowd of 2,000.

It was the regular-season finale for both teams. But one would have thought it was a loser-out game with a state berth up for grabs judging by the intensity.

CdA (16-4 overall, 14-2 Border League), which will be home for the entire region tournament, will take on the winner of a loser-out game Monday pitting No. 5 seed Sandpoint at No. 4 Post Falls.

No. 3 LC (11-9, 8-8) will travel to No. 2 Lewiston in the other opener. The tournament concludes at CdA.

Although CdA built a 10-point lead midway through the fourth quarter, this game was never out of reach.

LC, which enjoyed a nine-point lead when it controlled tempo in the first half, pulled within 52-50 when sophomore point guard Jacob Lenz stepped behind a screen for a free-throw-line jumper with 1:42 remaining.

Following a CdA turnover, LC had two shots to tie. But Chad Bramlet was too far under the basket and his putback rimmed out.

Two free throws by Lukas O’Dowd extended CdA’s lead to four points. Then the defensive play of the game came when 6-foot-6 post Casey Hoorelbeke stepped out to block a 3-point attempt by LC’s Chad Cheeley.

In the ensuing scramble for the ball, the Viks pushed the ball in transition and Hoorelbeke was fouled making a layup. He completed the three-point play to make it 57-50 with 49 seconds remaining.

LC kept plugging away, and a 3-pointer by Cheeley with :08 left got the Timberwolves within 60-56 before O’Dowd made a free throw at the 3-second mark.

“Since the very first game between Lake City and Coeur d’Alene they’ve been tournament-atmosphere games,” CdA coach Larry Bieber said. “Both teams could be 0-19 and it would be intense. This is really good for us for next week.”

LC coach Jim Winger was as pleased with his team as if it had won.

“We showed what we can do,” Winger said. “The old coach’s line about teams in February get better or they get worse, very few stay the same; I think our kids are getting better. As far as being proud, I’m absolutely proud of our effort.”

Hoorelbeke led CdA with 25 points. Cheeley topped LC with 17.

LC gave up some critical second and third offensive rebounds. That was perhaps offset by CdA’s poor free-throw shooting.

Like their game against Lewiston last week, the Viks struggled at the foul line, making 18 of 34. They went to the line enough times in the final period to make up for the misses as they made 12 of 19.

LC was 20 of 30 from the foul line, 10 of 16 in the fourth period.

The T-Wolves had CdA concerned in the first half. A 13-0 run put LC ahead 15-8 late in the first quarter. Three minutes into the second quarter, LC led 24-15. CdA rallied to cut the deficit to 26-22 by halftime.

The third quarter was back and forth until a rebound basket by David Wood with 3 seconds left gave CdA a 42-39 lead going into the final quarter.

CdA won the first game 62-54 in early January.
