Cougars Bury Bears With Threes

Women’s basketball

The Washington State University women’s basketball team used 12 3-pointers to defeat California 87-64 in Pacific-10 Conference women’s basketball at Friel Court Thursday night.

Joanna Smith hit six 3-pointers, and Yvonne Kunze went 8 for 13 from the field and 2 for 4 from the free-throw line to lead the Cougars (11-12 overall, 5-9 in Pac-10 play) with 18 points each. Alke Dietel added 15 points and Jennifer Kerns scored 13 points to go with six assists.

The Golden Bears (5-18, 1-12) were led by Paige Bowie’s 18 points, including 7 for 13 from the field. Sherrise Smith poured in 13 points and Jennie Leander added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Trailing 36-29 at halftime, Cal climbed back and trailed 45-44 with about 16 minutes left.

The Cougars responded with four consecutive three-pointers, three of them coming from Smith, to hit Cal with a 14-2 run that put WSU ahead 59-47.

Both WSU’s 12 team 3-pointers and Smiths’ six individual treys were one short of WSU single-game records.

Super sub Kristin Folkl scored 26 points, and the Cardinal (16-5, 12-1) used an 18-3 run late in the game to defeat the Huskies (16-7, 7-7) at Seattle.

The Cardinal won for the 10th straight time and 14th in 15 starts. Stanford beat the Huskies for the ninth straight time, including a 20-point victory at home last month.

The Huskies were led by Jamie Redd’s 23 points and Amber Hall’s 13.

At Bozeman, Mont., freshman Allison Bach came off the bench to score 13 points, leading the Bobcats past the Eagles.

Montana State (10-14 overall, 5-9 Big Sky) used a 9-2 run to take a 22-14 halftime lead. The teams combined for 25 turnovers in the first half.

Montana State used a 19-9 run to take a 41-23 advantage midway through the second half.

Juli Carlson led Eastern Washington with 11 points.

Nicole Erickson’s jumper with 55 seconds left and Lauren Rice’s two free throws 36 seconds later sent the Blue Devils (19-6, 12-3 ACC) past the Wolfpack (20-5, 11-4).

Duke can clinch the regular season ACC title with a victory over Virginia on Sunday.
