House Oks Exemption For Dental Prostheses

From Staff And Wire Reports

House Speaker Mike Simpson, a Blackfoot dentist, took part in the debate on Tuesday as the House voted 65-5 for a bill making it clear that dental prostheses and other orthodontic devices are exempt from the state sales tax.

The measure, which goes to the Senate, would cost the state about $600,000 per year in sales tax revenue. But sponsors said it was a matter of fairness because similar nondental devices are not taxed.

“We should make the sales tax make sense, or repeal the exemptions for everything else,” Simpson said.
