Obituaries

Charles Fredericksen Pullman

Memorial service for Charles Paul Fredericksen, 77, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Pullman. A private graveside service will be held at the Pullman City Cemetery. Kimball Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Fredericksen, who was born in Idaho, died Wednesday.

He grew up in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and graduated from high school there.

Mr. Fredericksen worked for Safeway and then served in the Navy during World War II.

In 1944 he married Van Essa Bunch in Vero Beach, Fla.

After his Navy discharge, he and his wife moved to Coeur d’Alene, and he returned to work for Safeway Stores.

Mr. Fredericksen was transferred to Chewelah, Wash., then to Bonners Ferry where he managed the Safeway store, and to Pullman in 1960.

Following 20 years with the Pullman Safeway Store, he owned and operated Chuck’s Hardware Store in Pullman for 18 years until he retired.

He was a member of the Whitman Eagles Lodge 49, Rotary Club, Fly Casters, American Legion and the Pullman Chamber of Commerce.

During his retirement he was an active volunteer with the Multiple Sclerosis Association.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Cathie Ann Paul of Burlington, Wash., and Paula Roy of Boise; a foster daughter, Edith Borgman of Othello, Wash.; two brothers, Orval Fredericksen of Bonners Ferry and Jack Fredericksen of Fresno, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Christina (Klawunder) Peterson Greenacres

Graveside service for Christina (Klawunder) Peterson, 86, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Pines Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 11:30 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Fairfield is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Peterson, who was born in Mount Hope, died Tuesday.

In 1931 she graduated from Valleyford High School and married Melvin Peterson in Valleyford.

Mrs. Peterson lived most of her life in the Spokane area and was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and the Moran Prairie Grange.

Her husband died in 1987.

Mrs. Peterson is survived by a daughter, Mary Felkins of Orting, Wash.; a brother, Les Klawunder; three grandsons and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or to the Good Samaritan Towers in Greenacres.

Robert Mitchel Spokane

Memorial service for Robert F. Mitchel, 74, will be at 4 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South.

Mr. Mitchel, who was born in Milwaukee, died Thursday.

He graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Science degree in soils. He also boxed while at the university.

Mr. Mitchel served in the Army during World War II.

He was the director of soils survey classification and correlations division for the Department of Agriculture from 1965 until he retired in 1979.

Mr. Mitchel was a member of the Elks Lodge. He was involved in coaching Pee Wee baseball and was the past president of the Spokane Faceting Club.

He was a 34-year resident of Spokane.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Marilyn; two sons, Michael Mitchel of Puyallup, Wash., and Dan Mitchel of Portland; a daughter, Jane Mitchel of Monterey, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children.

Esther Irvine Newport, Wash.

No service will be held for Esther Ellen Hazel Irvine, 95. ShermanKnapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Irvine, who was born in Sloan, Iowa, died Tuesday.

She had been living in Newport since 1996, when she moved there from Spokane. She had lived in Spokane from 1975 to 1996.

Prior to living in Spokane, she lived in Iowa.

Mrs. Irvine worked at a day-care center in Spokane from 1980 to 1991.

Her husband, George Irvine, died in 1975.

Survivors include a son, Mikeal Powell of Blanchard, Idaho; two sisters, Leola Anderson of Milford, Iowa, and Gretchen Hoehaus of Strawberry Point, Iowa; six grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Northern Idaho Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

George Howell Jr. Spokane

No service will be held for George Charles Howell Jr. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Howell, 53, died Wednesday.

He was born and raised in Trinidad, West Indies, and moved to the United States at the age of 16.

Mr. Howell served in the Army in the 1960s and 1970s.

He was a 23-year resident of Spokane and worked for Harpers in Post Falls.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Vivian; and four sons, J.D. Howell of New York, and Rodney, Rusty and Toni Howell, all of Spokane.

Margaret Kennedy Spokane

Visitation for Margaret M. Kennedy, 87, will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday and Monday and from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Private burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Kennedy, who was a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Thursday.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and in 1928 married to Robert Kennedy in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Kennedy worked for Sears Roebuck and Co.’s credit department for many years before she retired.

She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Ladies Auxiliary 5, and a longtime member and past president of the Spokane Woman’s Club.

Her husband died in 1954.

Survivors include a daughter, Pat Swanson of Spokane; a sister, Julia Rogers of Viola, Idaho; three grandsons and one great-grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Spokane Animal Shelter or the American Cancer Society.

Gordon Allen Spokane

Private inurnment for Gordon K. Allen, 75, will be held at Fairmount Memorial Park at a later date. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Allen, who was born in Spokane, died Wednesday.

He graduated from North Central High School and served in the Air Force during World War II. He was a mechanic on B-24s in England.

Mr. Allen then went into banking and started as a bookkeeper at Seafirst Bank. He went on to be a branch manager in different cities throughout Washington state.

He moved back to Spokane 19 years ago.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Doris; a son, Gordie Allen of Spokane; a daughter, Mary Allen of Spokane; three grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Union Gospel Mission.

Mark Higgins Greenacres

Memorial service for Mark A. Higgins, 33, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.

Mr. Higgins, who was a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Thursday from pneumonia.

He graduated from West Valley High School.

Survivors include his mother, Terry Higgins at the home; two sisters, Tina Striek of Mountlake Terrace, Wash., and Toni Higgins of La Center, Wash.; and his grandfather, Ernest Higgins of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Bernice Drinkard Spokane

No service will be held for Bernice M. Drinkard, 84, at her request. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Drinkard, who was an 81-year resident of Spokane, died Wednesday.

She was born in Crofton, Neb., and worked as a draperies seamstress.

Mrs. Drinkard was a member of the Corbin Park Methodist Church.

Her husband, Francis Drinkard, died in 1990.

Survivors include a daughter, Darlene Sannes of Kennewick; two sons, F. Derald Drinkard of Sandpoint and Dennis Drinkard of Spokane; a sister, Mildred Jordan of Spokane; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lilac Plaza Memorial Fund or Hospice of Spokane.

Stephen Nielson Spokane

Visitation for Stephen Curtis Nielson, 36, will be from noon to 6 p.m. today and Sunday and from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Nielson, who was born in Spokane, died Thursday from cancer.

He graduated in 1980 from Gonzaga Prep and in 1990 married Kathleen Coleman in Spokane.

Mr. Nielson worked as a mental health technician at Eastern State Hospital.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Angelica and Abagail Nielson, both at home; his mother, Elgene Nielson of Spokane; and his father, William Nielson of Kettle Falls, Wash.

Dorothy Gallaway Spokane

Graveside memorial service for Dorothy M. Gallaway, 71, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Odessa (Wash.) Cemetery. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gallaway, a 38-year resident of Spokane, died Feb. 21.

She was born in Odessa and graduated from Odessa High School.

Mrs. Gallaway was a homemaker and a former resident of Moses Lake. She was a member of Hillyard Congregational Church.

Survivors include two sons, Gregory and Steven Gallaway, both of Spokane; two sisters, Lucille Underwood of Spokane and Lillian Derr of Tacoma; and a brother, Donald Schibel of Odessa.
