Second-Place Bruins Edge Cougs

From Staff And Wire Reports

Pac-10 women

Janae Hubbard scored 26 points and pulled down 18 rebounds as the host UCLA Bruins used a second-half comeback to down visiting Washington State 80-74 Friday in a women’s Pacific-10 Conference basketball game at Pauley Pavilion.

Hubbard had scoring help from Melanie Pearson, who tallied 19; Maylana Martin with 13; and Marie Philman, who added 10 as the Bruins (17-7 overall, 12-3 Pac-10) remained in second place in the conference.

Senior Yvonne Kunze paced Washington State (11-14, 5-11) with 25 points. Joanna Smith added 12 on four 3-pointers.

UCLA used a 9-0 run 12 minutes into the second half to overcome a slim WSU lead. With Pearson scoring five in the run, the Bruins went from a 60-59 deficit to a 68-60 lead with 5:20 to play.

The Cougars closed to within four points twice in the final 5 minutes, once on a Yvonne Volkman jumper and two free throws from Jennifer Kerns, then a second time on back-to-back buckets by Kunze that narrowed the score to 72-68.

Leading by five inside the 2-minute mark, UCLA jumped to an 11-point lead at 80-69 before Kunze hit a 3-pointer and Kerns a layin in the closing seconds that produced the final 80-74 score.

“We had numerous opportunities and we just didn’t convert,” Cougars coach Harold Rhodes said. “We missed several layins and when we forced a turnover, we didn’t always attack the basket. We also did not rebound well in the second half.”

The Cougars forced UCLA into 24 turnovers and committed 19 of their own.

Washington State plays Southern California at 2 p.m. Sunday in Los Angeles. UCLA will play at home against Washington on Sunday.
