Top-ranked Pete Sampras defeated Sjeng Schalken 6-2, 6-2 to move into the Advanta Championships semifinals in Philadelphia.

Sampras will face 19-year-old Tommy Haas, the No. 6 seed, who advanced along with Thomas Enqvist and Richey Reneberg.

In Oklahoma City, No. 1 seed Lindsay Davenport won in straight sets to move into the semifinals of the IGA Tennis Classic against third-seeded Venus Williams.

Davenport, ranked second in the world, beat Lee Ghirardi-Rubbi of France 6-1, 6-4. Williams won 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 over unseeded Francesca Lubiani of Italy.

Sarah Pitkowski of France, seeded seventh, will play No. 4 seed Joannette Kruger of South Africa in the other semifinal match.

In Linz, Austria, Jana Novotna breezed into the semifinals of the Austrian Open with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Russia’s Anna Kournikova.
