Gonzaga Loses Last Tuneup

Women’s basketball

“We got outplayed.”

That, in a nutshell, said Gonzaga University women’s basketball coach Kellee Barney is the fate that befell the Bulldogs Monday night in Boise.

Capitalizing on 28 Gonzaga turnovers and 28 converted free throws, the Broncos pulled out a 75-65 win in the Bulldogs’ final pre-league game.

“Hopefully, this will serve as a wakeup call,” said Barney, whose Bulldogs (8-4) open West Coast Conference play at home Thursday against Loyola Marymount.

“We sent them to the freethrow line too many times,” said Barney, “and they did a good job of handling our press.”

While the Broncos (7-5) made 28 of 42 free throws, the Bulldogs got to the line just 19 times, making 14.

“They didn’t press,” said Barney, and therefore didn’t collect the number of fouls that plagued Gonzaga. But then the Broncos didn’t have to. The Zags turned the ball over 28 times.

“And they hit the offensive boards hard,” said Barney. “They got 21. We got 17, but we gave up some critical, critical rebounds that hurt us.”

Barney praised the play of senior guard Sandy Gere, who had a game-high 19 points, “but she didn’t get much help.”

The Bulldogs were missing freshman Holly Turner (flu) and sophomore Jessica Waltz (rib, spine injury), “and that didn’t help us,” Barney added.

Junior forward Kim Brydges led three Broncos in double figures with 16 points, and 6-foot-4 freshman Stephanie Block had a gamehigh 10 rebounds.
