Obituaries

Ansel Peterson Spokane

Service for Ansel C. Peterson, 67, will be at 1 p.m. today at Spokane Christian Center. Burial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Tahoma National Cemetery. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Peterson, who was born in Grand Forks, N.D., died Friday.

He served in the Air Force during the Korean War as a Russian language/ linguist specialist.

Mr. Peterson received his Bachelor of Philosophy and a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of North Dakota.

In 1956 he married Ardath Bjelde.

He was a professional engineer in Oregon and Washington and worked for the Bonneville Power Administration from 1958 until 1981.

Mr. Peterson worked one season with H and R Block and 10 years as a Senior Driver Improvement Program instructor for the Inland Automobile Association.

He was also a volunteer tax counselor for the elderly.

Mr. Peterson was active with the YMCA, was a member of the Spokane Christian Center and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, David and Brian Peterson; a sister, Deloris Wurzbacher; and two grandchildren.

Effie (Sipes) Wilson Burrell Spokane

Rosary for Effie Ellen (Sipes) Wilson Burrell, 87, will be at 7 p.m. today at Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Colbert. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Burrell, who was born in Carney, Okla., died Wednesday.

She was a registered nurse and moved to Spokane in the early 1980s from California.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Colbert.

Her husband, Charles Burrell, died in 1985.

Mrs. Burrell’s survivors include two daughters, Vera Calvert of Spokane and Mary Stezaker of Las Vegas; a son, John Wilson of Yuma, Ariz.; a stepson, Lloyd Burrell of Los Angeles; a brother, Bill Sipes of Eureka, Calif.; four sisters, Ogatha Rogers of Deming, N.M., Pearl Soderback and Dorothy Carrigan, both of Post Falls, and Madeline Sharp of Isabella, Calif.; 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Mary Hartman Coeur d’Alene

Graveside service for Mary B. Hartman, 81, will be at 1 p.m. today at Riverside Memorial Park in Spokane. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hartman, who was born in Alberton, Wash., died Friday.

She grew up in Post Falls and graduated from high school there in 1932. She also graduated from Northwestern Business College in Spokane.

Mrs. Hartman lived in Spokane for many years and worked as a bookkeeper for various local businesses before retiring in 1976.

She moved to Post Falls in 1982 and to Coeur d’Alene in 1988.

Mrs. Hartman was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Eagles Auxiliary and the Kootenai Medical Center Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry, in 1984.

Survivors include a daughter, Lou Ann Curtis of Bellevue, Wash.; a sister, Martha Hubbard of Coeur d’Alene; and two grandchildren.

Alice Baker Spokane

Service for Alice S. Baker, 88, will be at 1 p.m. today at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Baker, who was born at Christina Lake, British Columbia, died Friday.

She was raised in Montana and graduated from high school there.

In 1931 she married Louis Baker in Libby, Mont., and she worked as a certified parliamentarian.

They moved to Spokane in the mid 1930s.

Her husband died in 1996.

Survivors include a sister, Helen Yarroll of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

Shawn McClenahan Spokane

Memorial service for Shawn Ann McClenahan, 39, will be at 2 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.

Ms. McClenahan, who was born in Walla Walla, was found dead Dec. 26.

She graduated from high school in Walla Walla and received her ward secretarial and phlebotomist’s certification from Spokane Community College.

Ms. McClenahan had worked with both Deaconess and Sacred Heart medical centers.

Survivors include a son, Joel Garcia of Deer Park; her father, James McClenahan of Spokane; her mother, Audrey Murray-McClenahan of Pittsfield, Mass.; two sisters, Kerry McClenahan of Portland and Kathleen Lloyd of Spokane; and three brothers, Patrick and Paul McClenahan, both of Spokane, and Bradley Smith of Rochester, N.Y.

Robert Mattox Davenport, Wash.

Service for Robert Mattox, 83, will be at 11 a.m. today at Strate Funeral Home in Davenport. Burial will follow at Reardan (Wash.) Cemetery.

Mr. Mattox, who was born in New Jersey, died Dec. 19.

He served in the Army during World War II, and in 1946 married Ella Yager in New Lisbon, N.Y.

Mr. Mattox worked as a general laborer in the construction industry.

He moved to the Davenport area in 1971.

His wife died in 1976.

He is survived by three sons, Daniel Mattox of Spokane, Glenn Mattox of Airway Heights and Charlie Mattox of Harrington, Wash.; four daughters, Debbie Hann of Rome, N.Y., Sharon DeForest of Newport News, Va., Laurie Wegner of Fircrest, Wash., and Judy Mattox of Spokane; a brother, Lloyd Mattox of Guilford, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Larry Carter Springdale, Wash.

Visitation for Larry L. Carter, 57, will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Wednesday at Heritage Funeral Home. Service is set for 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Springdale Cemetery.

Mr. Carter, who was born in Kokomo, Ind., died Saturday.

He graduated in 1958 from high school in Kokomo and served in the Marine Corps.

In 1966 he married Margie Crume in Mexico.

Mr. Carter worked as a warehouse foreman for Kal Kan and in 1980 moved to Springdale, where he and his wife owned and operated the Crown Tavern for several years.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jim Reagan of Post Falls, Lance Carter of Spokane and Dennis Esparza of Anaheim, Calif.; three daughters, Deniese Reagan of Springdale, Debbie Reagan of Tacoma and Jackie Carter of Spokane; three brothers, Jack Carter of Missouri, Jim Carter of Corning, Calif., and Sammie Corbin of San Diego; two sisters, Gladys Wilson and Betty Neal, both of Kokomo; and two grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Jeanne Mark Spokane

Memorial service for Jeanne N. Mark, 68, was Monday at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Private burial was held at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Mark, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Dec. 29.

She graduated in 1947 from Lewis and Clark High School and worked for a short time as a telephone operator. She was also a homemaker.

She was a member of Job’s Daughters, the Order of Eastern Star and the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

Her husband, Vern Mark, died in 1993.

Survivors include two daughters, Paula Countryman of Spokane and Mary Mark of Brier, Wash.; a sister, Meryl Wood of Spokane; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kidney Foundation or the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

Howard Campbell Spokane

Memorial service for Howard L. Campbell, 90, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Opportunity Presbyterian Church. Inurnment will be at a later date in Almira, Wash. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Campbell, who was born and raised in Wilbur, Wash., died Saturday.

He graduated from high school in Wilbur and worked at the Kaiser Shipyards in Oakland, Calif., during World War II.

Mr. Campbell farmed for many years in the Almira area and retired in 1970.

He moved to Spokane in 1973 and married Helen Kortee in Spokane that same year.

Mr. Campbell was a member of Almira Masonic Lodge 127, the Washington State Grange, Washington Association of Wheat Growers and Opportunity Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Janis Parks of Ogden, Utah; four brothers, Ralph and Robert Campbell, both of Almira, Ray Campbell of Wilbur and Frank Campbell of Davenport; a sister, Lilly McAllister of Wilbur; and one grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to Opportunity Presbyterian Church.

Walter Renner Ritzville, Wash.

Service for Walter R. Renner, 68, was Monday at Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville. Burial followed at Ritzville Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Renner, who died Wednesday, was born in Beulah, N.D.

He served in the Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Renner worked for area farmers and for the Lincoln County rockcrushing crew before beginning farming the David Webber farm in 1970.

In 1978 he married Judy Schell in Reno, Nev., and he farmed the Webber ranch for more than 27 years.

Mr. Renner was a member of C.J. Newland American Legion Post 51 of Ritzville, the Odessa (Wash.) Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Ritzville Gun Club, the Ritzville Eagles Lodge and the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Club.

Survivors include his wife, Judy; two daughters, Rhonda Ostriem of Yakima and Stacey Schoessler of Ritzville; three sons, Tom Renner of Deer Park, Colby Schell of Ritzville and Jason Renner of Zillah, Wash.; a brother, Edwin Renner of Beulah; and eight grandchildren.

James Allen Spokane

Service for James Perry Allen, 73, is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Private burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mr. Allen, who was born in Bulls Gap, Tenn., died Friday.

He served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Allen moved to Spokane in 1941 and worked as a bricklayer in construction.

Survivors include a son, James Allen Jr. of Sacramento, Calif.; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Pauline Lisenbee Oakesdale, Wash.

Service for Pauline Lisenbee, 93, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Kramer Funeral Home in Tekoa, Wash. Burial will follow in the Oakesdale Cemetery.

Mrs. Lisenbee, who was born in Dayton, Wash., died Saturday.

She moved to the Tekoa area as a child and in 1926 married Virgil Lisenbee in Spokane and they made their home in the Spring Valley, Wash., area where they farmed.

Later they moved to the Tilma, Idaho, area and farmed the Rinehart family farm.

In 1935 they purchased a farm in the Warner Siding District between Oakesdale and Farmington, Wash., and farmed until their retirement in 1980.

Her husband died in 1980, and she moved into Oakesdale.

Mrs. Lisenbee was a member of Hazel Rebekah Lodge 72 and the Pine Creek Club.

She is survived by a son, Wayne Lisenbee of Oakesdale.

Marion ‘Jean’ Stark Spokane

Memorial service for Marion Aljean “Jean” Stark, 74, is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Opportunity Free Methodist Church. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Stark, who was born in Chewelah, Wash., died Friday.

She was raised in Chewelah and graduated from high school there.

Mrs. Stark moved to Spokane in 1941 and worked at the Naval Supply Depot in Spokane during World War II.

She then worked as a cocktail waitress for 25 years at various restaurants and lounges. She retired in 1970.

Her husband of 45 years, Kenneth Stark, died in 1989.

Survivors include three sons, Michael Stark of Valleyford, and Terry and Randy Stark both of Mica; three brothers, Duke Meyer of Chewelah, Dick Meyer of Spokane, and Ernie Meyer of Oak Harbor, Wash.; a sister, Maxine Brauner of Indio, Calif.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Opportunity Free Methodist Church or the American Heart Association.

Louie ‘Lou’ Erickson St. Maries

Graveside service for Louie Jean “Lou” Erickson, 67, will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries. A life celebration will follow at the St. Maries Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Erickson, who was born in Driggs, Idaho, died Saturday.

She grew up in Driggs and in Vancouver, Wash., and graduated from high school in Vancouver in 1948.

Mrs. Erickson moved to Hayden Lake, Idaho, after graduation and lived in Coeur d’Alene before moving to the Benewah Valley near St. Maries in 1973.

She was a homemaker and owned the Yardstick Sewing Store before working at the Triple X feed store until 1990.

Mrs. Erickson was a member of the Mormon Church and the Valley Peace Makers Quilt Club.

Survivors include her husband, Bruce; a son, Alvin Erickson of Post Falls; six daughters, Catherine Jewitt of Hayden Lake, Cynthia Hodges of St. Maries, Candice Lyman, Carren Day and Toni Miller, all of Post Falls, and Carla Erickson of Seattle; three brothers, Larry and Clint Stevens, both of Hayden Lake, and Marvin Stevens of Chelan, Wash.; three sisters, Donna Beranos of the Tri-Cities, Karolyn Sejo of Elma, Wash., and Cheryl McAtee of Lewiston; 22 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Roy Johnson Tekoa, Wash.

Service for Roy B. Johnson, 90, will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Garfield Christian Church in Garfield, Wash. Burial will follow at the Garfield Cemetery in Garfield. Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnson, who was born on the family homestead near Elberton, Wash., died Saturday.

He graduated in 1926 from Garfield High School and worked many jobs in the farming and logging industries in the Garfield and Potlatch, Idaho, areas.

In 1938 he married Leona Carscallen in Moscow, Idaho. They made their home in Potlatch and he worked for Nirk Lumber Mill.

In 1945 they moved to Garfield and Mr. Johnson worked for the Garfield School District as a custodian from 1946 to 1967. He then worked for Washington State University until he retired in 1972.

Mr. Johnson was a member and past master of the Ladow Grange 994 in Garfield.

His wife died in 1983, and he moved to Tekoa in 1996.

Survivors include three sons, Royce Johnson of Farmington, Wash., Bruce Johnson of Yakima and Edgar Johnson of Garfield; two daughters, Sondra Aldegarie of Missoula and Nancy Hathaway of Garfield; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Garfield-Farmington Emergency Medical Technicians.

Eleanor Strayer Newport, Wash.

Memorial service for Eleanor Adele Strayer, 85, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Church of Christ in Newport. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Strayer, a lifetime Newport resident, died Wednesday.

She graduated in 1930 from Newport High School.

In 1933 she married Albert Strayer in Newport.

Mrs. Strayer worked at the high school and assisted in tutoring children.

She was a member of the Zillah Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the United Church of Christ, the women’s fellowship group, the Diamond Lake Grange, Chapter O of the PEO, Newport Study Club and the Pend Oreille Historical Society. She was first guardian of Bethel Job’s Daughters.

Her husband died in 1997.

Survivors include two daughthers, Ann Beeman of Portland and Nancy Flint of Columbia Falls, Mont.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Esther Owsley Moscow, Idaho

Memorial service for Esther Wigen Owsley, 94, will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Good Samaritan Village Lounge in Moscow, Idaho. Burial will be today at the Hillcrest Cemetery in La Grande, Ore. Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Owsley, who was born in LaCrosse, Wash., died Friday.

She worked as a bookkeeper and stenographer at Myklebust’s in Lacrosse.

In 1926 she married Alfred Owsley in Walla Walla and they lived in Arlington, La Grande and Enterprise, Ore.

They then moved to Sunnyside, Wash., in the early 1960s, and she moved to Moscow in 1980.

Mrs. Owsley was a member of the Good Samaritan Village, Rainbow Girls as mother adviser and the Order of the Eastern Star as grand deputy and past matron.

Her husband died in 1980.

Survivors include four grandchildren, Pat Owsley and Linda Nixon both of Moscow, Idaho, Chris Owsley of Potlatch, Idaho and Kathy Foster of Seattle; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Village in Moscow.

Donald Corey Spokane

Memorial service for Donald E. Corey, 71, was Monday at Riplinger Funeral Home. burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Corey died Thursday.

He graduated from Rogers High School and served in the Navy.

Mr. Corey worked in the family business, Corey Safe and Lock Co. until it was sold.

He later owned and operated a tavern with his wife, Norma.

Mr. Corey was a member of the Eagles and Moose lodges of Spokane.

His wife died in 1984.

Survivors include four daughters, Judith Hudson, Shirley Fifer and Shannon Frasher, all of Spokane and Carol Sue Corey of Fresno, Calif.; a son, Donald Corey of Spokane; a sister, Lorraine Williams of Beaverton, Ore.; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Elsie Wallender Root Smelterville, Idaho

Graveside service for Elsie Wallender Root, 90, was Monday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Root, who was born in North Dakota, died Friday.

She moved to Smelterville 18 years ago and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Root was a member of the Starr Road Baptist Mission, Sinto Senior Center and the Kellogg Senior Center and was Grandmother of the Year in 1995.

Survivors include two sons, Dale Wallender of Spokane and Clifford Wallender of Longview, Wash.; a daughter, Maxine Johnson of Smelterville, Idaho; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
