Graduates Of Community Leadership Classes Named

Leadership Spokane Institute for Neighborhood Leadership and Youth Leadership Spokane graduated their 1997 classes of students after they completed the 10-month program.

The Leadership Spokane classes are to prepare and encourage a diverse group of community members to assume trustee leader roles to help build effective communities throughout the area, said Judith Mason, executive director.

This year’s Leadership Spokane graduates are: Jack Fallis, Steve Pretz, Liz Carroll, Tom Stebbins, Rich Steltenpohl, Jan Hession, Maggie Crabtree, Terry Moore, Ginger Marshall, Linda Peterson, Ben Cabildo, Christi Smith, Joan Menzies, Debbie Simock and Peggy Berkaana.

Cynthia Norwood, Todd Woodard, Scott McGann, Nick Beamer, David Flowers, Sally Rasmusson, Tom Schaaf, Rifka Bullen, Rick Colon, Debbie Hanks, Jodi Harland and Margie Jordan.

Thirty high school students from throughout Spokane County completed the first Youth Leadership Spokane program.

The classes are to help prepare and encourage a diverse group of sophomore and junior high school students to become future community leaders.

The students are: Sara Hammer, Michael Bloom, Beth Bow, Jessie Quintero, Rebecca Som, Sarah Emami, Eric Breeden, Todd Engstrom, Marc Cote, John Treppiedi, Joel Wickre, Anthony Layton, Lindsay Lyman, Allison Lambert and Angela Hoard.

Kristine Lockwood, MonaLisa Operana, Becky Gaffney-Brown, Jennifer Wolfe, Todd Broughton, Ryan Cassidy, Troy McLaughlin, Andy Rigsby, Keshia Shorts, Eric Forbes, Pat Luce, Brian-Keith Jennings, Atiya Palmer, Luke Bowman and Amber Lewis.

Students in the Spokane Community College’s fluid power program captured first place in a national design competition last summer that was sponsored by the National Fluid Power Distributors Association.

The students built an automated machine that crushes cans using advanced air-over-oil technology. The team members are Carl Adair, Coree Bitter, Shane Bryant, Tom Lawler, Bart Pulliam and Steve Stromberger, along with instructor John Curran.

Ivan Schikora has been promoted to master sergeant in the Air Force.

Schikora is stationed at Hulbert Field Air Force Base and lives with his family in Navarre, Fla.

He is the son of Patricia Basler of Spokane.

J. Roderick Stackelberg, a history professor at Gonzaga University, was named the Robert K. and Ann J. Powers Professor of the Humanities for the next two years.

The honor is for outstanding teachers and scholars in the areas of history, philosophy, language or literature.

Stackelberg has worked on the origins of Nazism and the Holocaust, particularly its relation to German intellectual history.

Shana Kuhle, the daughter of Robert Perkins and Kristina Ross, was inducted into the honor society of Phi Beta Kappa upon graduating last May from San Diego University. Kuhle, a graduate of Mead High School, is working toward master’s degrees in English and biology.

Kevin Spruill, Spokane, received a scholarship from a national art contest sponsored by the Art Instruction Schools of Minneapolis, a home-study art school.
