M’S Ducey, Rizzs Will Be At Sfcc

The SAFECO Seattle Mariners’ annual mid-winter tour through the Northwest winds up a three-week sojourn Friday in Spokane.

Outfielder Rob Ducey and broadcaster Rick Rizzs will be in the Spokane Falls Community College gymnasium from 4-5:30 p.m. for a free clinic for “youngsters of all ages.”

Ducey will demonstrate baseball techniques and he and Rizzs will discuss baseball with those who turn out. Last year’s event drew 1,000 to its Spokane stop.

High school wrestling

Shawn Gilmour sprung a surprise move on Robert Painter for a second-round pin at 101 pounds to provide Newport with its only points in a 70-6 loss to Great Northern League power Lakeside.

The Eagles used seven first-period pins and two forfeits to amass 54 points in the makeup meet at Newport on Monday night.

Best match was at 148, which was 2-2 going into the third period.

Brandon Leander and Jamie Gwinn combined to outscore the Bulldogs in the second half as the Warriors blew open a close non-league game after intermission.

Leander, who made his last seven free throws after missing his first, had 15 of his game-high 22 points and Gwinn, 5 for 5 from the line, scored 15 of his 19 the second half. Ben George led Kettle Falls with 15.
