Whitworth Rallies To Victory

College women’s basketball

The Whitworth College women’s basketball team held off a late Willamette rally and Kristi Pentzer sealed the Pirates’ 67-64 victory with two free throws in the final 12 seconds Friday at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

The win evened the Pirates’ over-all record at 8-8, but more importantly kept them tied for third place at 7-3 in the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. Willamette dropped to 8-8, 5-5.

The Pirates trailed 42-27 before going on a 29-8 run in a 10-minute period of the second half.

Willamette’s Kristen Anderson scored four of her team-high 12 points in the final 3:30 and the Bearcats drew as close as 63-62 with 1:12 left.

Whitworth’s Star Olson then scored on a layup and Pentzer closed it out from the foul line.

Andrea Sherer, a senior center, led the Bucs with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman forward Jamie Wakefield added 13 points.

The Bulldogs shot 31 percent from the field in the first half, falling behind by 23 points in a West Coast Conference game at San Francisco.

The Dons (7-12, 3-4 WCC) led 43-20 at halftime after shooting 55 percent in the first half.

Gonzaga (9-10, 1-6) was led by Holly Turner, who scored 13 points. Melanie Tipps added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Eden Palacio scored 19 points to lead the Tigers past the Vandals in a Big West Conference game.

The Vandals (8-12, 4-3 Big West), down 35-22 at halftime, went on a 23-9 run to cut Pacific’s lead to 45-44 with 5:49 remaining in the game. But Pacific (6-11, 2-4) responded with a quick 6-0 spurt to make it 51-44 with 4:35 left.

Kelli Johnson led the Vandals with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
