Going To Bat For The Flag
Calling burning the American flag “one of the worst things that can happen in America,” Tommy Lasorda urged the Senate on Wednesday to approve a constitutional amendment that would protect the U.S. flag from desecration. Recalling a flag-burning attempt at a baseball game in Los Angeles in 1976, Lasorda, former manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers and now the team’s general manager, said, “We all watched dumbstruck as the man pulled out a match and tried to light the American flag to burn it.” But Chicago Cubs outfielder Rick Monday grabbed the flag away before protesters could set it afire “one of the most heroic acts ever to take place on the field during a major-league baseball game,” Lasorda said.
