Local Teams Place Third

Both remaining Spokane entries placed third Wednesday in Basketball Congress International boys tournaments in Phoenix.

Kirby Fike scored 26 points and Ryan Simpson had 25 as the Spokane Blue Devils thumped Team Texas for third place in the U15 competition.

Earlier, the Utah Bruins knocked the Blue Devils out of the winners bracket 91-87. Kevin Aronson led the Blue Devils with 25 points.

In U14 play, Spokane Brewster Heights Packing claimed third place by defeating the New Mexico Lobos from Albuquerque 79-70. The Oklahoma Pirates edged the Spokane entry in their semifinals 58-54.

Joe Arquette of Yakima and Danny Pariseau of Spokane represented Spokane Brewster Heights Packing on the all-tournament team.

Golf

Jared Herling was the only winner among four area players as match play began at the 97th Pacific Northwest Golf Association’s men’s amateur tournament at Bear Creek Country Club in Woodinville, Wash.

Herling downed Tyler Dion of Mukilteo, Wash., 3 and 2. Ryan Nelson of Cornelius, Ore., beat Tom Larsen of Moscow, Idaho, 4 and 3. Dusty Brett of Tacoma ousted Denny Larue of Spokane 8 and 7, and Troy Kelly, Bremerton, edged Ryan Benzel of Ritzville, 1 up on the 19th hole.

Indian Canyon’s David Christenson posted a 9-under par 63 to win the first day of the Seafirst Pro-Am, preliminary to the 11th Rosauers Open at Indian Canyon.

Five-man teams representing Rosauers and Zellerbach, headed by pros Mike Reasor and Mark Gardner respectively, tied for the top spot in the pro-am with scores of 111. Gardner was one of four pros tied for second place individually with rounds of 65.

Baseball

Eric Bell homered as the Blue Devils scored five runs in the fourth inning and defeated the Royals 10-2 in Triple-A American Legion play at Jackson Field.

In the second game, the North Stars tripped the Cannons 5-3. At Pullman, the Bandits swept the Patriots 12-4 and 11-2.
