Smith Captures State Junior

Brandon Smith, who plays out of MeadowWood Golf Course, defeated Matt Kodama of Wandermere Golf Course on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff Friday to win the Washington State Junior Golf Association Tournament for boys 16-17 at the par-72 Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

Kodama, who entered the final day with a three-stroke lead, shot a 76 to finish with a 219. Smith reached 219 with a round of 72.

Ryan Camp and Corey Prugh, who both play out of Manito Golf and Country Club, finished tied for third at 221.

Results from other age-group divisions were not available.

Columbia Cup

Miss Budweiser, driven by Dave Villwock, averaged 162.502 mph Friday in Kennewick on the first day of qualifying for Sunday’s Budweiser Columbia Cup unlimited hydroplane race.

Villwock drove the same boat in which he was seriously injured a year ago. During that mishap Villwock suffered injuries to his right hand that resulted in the loss of two fingers.

Other qualifiers included Miss Tri-Cities, driven by Nate Brown, at 156.740 mph; Miss Molson, driven by Steve David, at 152.931; PICO American Dream, driven by Mark Evans, at 151.830; Appian Jeronimo, driven by Mitch Evans, at 151.778; United Furniture Warehouse, driven by Rick Christensen, at 149.735; Carpenter Communications, driven by Mike Weber, at 142.207 and Miss E-Lam Plus, driven Jimmy King, at 130.000.

AA Legion baseball

Shane Meinhold drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the winning run as the Panorama Twins rallied for a 7-6 win over Granny’s Buffet in the AA American Legion baseball opener of the best-of-three North Division finals of the District Tournament.

Jim Hryniewicz’s sixth-inning grand slam powered Granny’s to a 14-10 win in the second game and evened the series at 1-1.

At Central Valley, Eric Everson fired a complete-game, three-hit shutout to help Kimmel Athletic Supply even its best-of-three Southern Division series at 1-1 with a 2-0 victory over Spokane Athletic Supply. Tyler Radkey had a two-out RBI single in the top of the sixth inning and Everson drove in an insurance run in the seventh for Kimmel.

SAS used a 12-run sixth inning to pound Kimmel in the opener 15-7. Bobby Gosney collected three hits for the victors.

Softball

The Spokane Speed won twice while the Spokane Smoke split a pair during the first day of the American Softball Association girls 18-U regional tournament in Billings, Mont.

The Speed defeated the Seattle Mustangs 5-0 and followed that with a 7-6 victory over the Spokane Sliders.

The Smoke fell to Oregon’s Softball Magic 6-2 before rallying for a 6-2 win over Mining City Magic of Butte, Mont.

The Speed take on the Billings Blues in a quarterfinal matchup this morning.

Also this morning, in the loser’s bracket, the Smoke will play the Missoula Magic and the Sliders take on the Portland Fury.

Soccer

The Inland Empire Soccer Association will host the 30th annual Spokane Cup tournament today and tomorrow at Underhill Park. Matches begin at 10 a.m. The championship match will be played Sunday at 2 p.m.
