Juneteenth Celebration At Cheney Cowles

The Cheney Cowles Museum will join Spokane’s African-American community to celebrate Juneteenth, the annual celebration that marks the day in 1865 when the last slaves in Texas were freed, 30 months after the Emancipation Proclamation was ratified.

The museum will celebrate the holiday with a special FamilyFest on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will include hands-on activities such as African hair braiding, banner and basket designing, pin making and textile making. There will also be an East African slide presentation, an East African dance workshop, and African storytelling.

The Onyx Youth Theater Group will perform from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Martin Luther King Jr. Center ECAP gospel/hip hop singers will perform from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Saturday is also a Spokane Food Bank Day. All attendees who bring three cans of Campbell’s soup will received free admission to the musuem. Admission includes a visit to the “Soup to Nute: Pop Art and It’s Legacy” exhibit and a tour of the adjacent 1898 Campell House in addition to the FamilyFest activities.

The museum is located at 2316 W. First. Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors, $2.50 for student and children ages 6-16, or $10 per family.
