Funk Leads Kemper After Record Round
The TPC at Avenel stood for The Pushover Course on Friday in the second round of the Kemper Open in Potomac, Md.
Fred Funk broke the tournament’s 36-hole scoring with a 12-under-par 130, three strokes ahead of Craig Parry, Stuart Appleby and Chris DiMarco going into the weekend.
Appley got his share of second place with a 63 that tied the course record, and it wasn’t even the best round of the day. Brad Elder, playing in only his third PGA Tour event since turning pro, also had a 63 and was at 134.
There were 24 eagles, including three holes-in-one on Friday.
Gary Player, 62, was atop the leaderboard at the PGA Nationwide Championship in Alpharetta, Ga., trying to become the second-oldest winner in the history of the Senior PGA Tour.
Player, wielding a deft touch with his irons, shot a 5-under-par 67 to grab a share of the lead with 51-year-old Gil Morgan.
Player, who will turn 63 on Nov. 1, was in position to become only the second 62-or-over golfer to win a Senior Tour event. Mike Fetchick won the 1985 Hilton Head Seniors Invitational on his 63rd birthday.
Annika Sorenstam, overcoming rainy weather, shot a 5-under-par 67 for a one-stroke, first-round lead of the weather-shortened LPGA Michelob Light Classic in St. Louis.
More than 2 inches of rain washed out the first round Thursday, which reduced the tournament to 54 holes.
One stroke behind Sorenstam was Caroline McMillan. Clarkston’s Robin Walton shot a 74.
Doug Dunakey, a struggling Nike Tour player, came within 2 feet of shooting the lowest score ever in a competitive PGA-sanctioned event in the Miami Valley Open in Springboro, Ohio. Instead, he became the fourth player to shoot a 59 - and the second in three weeks on the Nike Tour.
The 34-year-old Dunakey, who had 10 birdies and an eagle, and chipped in twice from off the green, came to the 441-yard, par-4 18th hole at the 6,691-yard Heatherwoode Golf Club, needing only a par to shoot a 58. But after hitting a 6-iron within 25 feet of the cup, he three-putted, missing a 2-footer for par.
