Inmate Files Claim From Jail Van Crash

An inmate injured when a jail transport van he was in crashed has filed a tort claim against Bonner County, saying officers failed to buckle him up.

Stanley K. Reep, 41, of Coeur d’Alene, was en route from Wallace to Sandpoint with two other inmates and jailer Charles Van Buren when the van collided with a pickup north of Hayden Lake on May 7.

Van Buren and the three prisoners were treated for their injuries at Kootenai Medical Center. Authorities claim none of the inmates was wearing seat belts before the crash.

Also in the collision were prisoners Mark A. Russell, 21, of Calder; and John Michael Parisi, 34, of Coeur d’Alene.

According to the $100,000 claim, Reep suffered a concussion and a herniated disk. If the county rejects the tort, he can file a lawsuit.

Darrell Rickard of Rathdrum was driving on Garwood Road when he failed to heed a stop sign and was hit by the van. Rickard was unhurt, and his daughter was treated and released at the hospital.
