Seahawks Release Blades

The Seattle Seahawks have released strong safety Bennie Blades, who was forced to miss almost the entire second half of last season because of three bulging discs in his lower back.

Blades, 31, played nine seasons with the Detroit Lions before signing with the Seahawks as a free agent last year. Blades, the brother of Seahawks wide receiver Brian Blades, is expected to retire.

Linebacker Robert Jones, who was Jimmy Johnson’s first-round draft pick in 1992, will be reunited with his coach and play for the Miami Dolphins this season.

Jones, 28, a six-year veteran who began his career with Johnson and the Dallas Cowboys, signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins.

Northwestern fullback Matt Hartl, 22, will miss the 1998 season because of a recurrence of Hodgkin’s disease. He will begin chemotherapy treatments within the next two weeks.
