Her Memories Keep Getting More Precious
Nancy Reagan spends most of her nights at home with her 87-year old, Alzheimer’s-stricken husband, “often reading her White House diaries and watching videos of state dinners and official trips,” says Vanity Fair.
She’s the only person former President Ronald Reagan recognizes on a regular basis, the magazine reports in a poignant profile, and he searches their Bel Air home for her when she’s not there.
“When I say my life began with Ronnie, well, it’s true,” Nancy tells an interviewer. “It did. Forty-six years? Can’t imagine it without him.
“Our relationship is very special,” she adds. “We were very much in love, and still are.”
Along with the Vanity Fair piece, the couple are cooperating in the making of a TBS television miniseries about them.
Loose talk
New National Rifle Association President Charlton Heston, on the political climate (in People magazine): “There are plenty of liberals out there with weapons. I also think there are more conservatives in the Hollywood closet than there are homosexuals.”
The one whose missile theories got shot down
Pierre Salinger turns 73 today.
Who could resist a bunch of dates with Newt?
The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force first received a calendar autographed by House Speaker Newt Gingrich - whose half-sister, Candace, is a gay activist - as a contribution to a fund-raising auction. Then came a fax saying the calendar was sent by mistake, and Gingrich “is not supportive of the … task force.” Together, the calendar and fax fetched $1,900, the most of any item at the auction.
Not quite as free as her husband, apparently
When she was in the White House, Rosalynn Carter recalls, people often asked her whether the first lady should receive compensation for her work. “If they were paid, they would have to have a job description and they would have to do certain things,” she said Monday. “But this way, she is free to do whatever she wants to do.”
Come on, he’s a lame duck, you silly Quayle
On CNN’s “Inside Edition,” former vice president Dan Quayle declared, “Let me just be very clear that the Republican Party will select a nominee that will beat Bill Clinton” - an interesting prospect, since the 22nd Amendment prohibits Clinton from seeking a third term.
Maybe the camera can teach her to never lie
That Vanity Fair with the Reagan article also features a photo spread of Monica Lewinsky barefoot on a Malibu beach, romping about in a backless chiffon cocktail dress. Says an editor: “She’s a gorgeous girl, and the camera really likes her.”
And that’s all from the ‘Wide World of Torts’
Former Lewinsky lawyer William Ginsburg, in a speech to members of the Los Angeles County Bar Association: “Don’t stand on the sidelines criticizing as a cold, timid soul who has never understood the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat.”
