Golden Wheels Return

Paul Delaney Correspondent

A trip to Stateline Speedway this weekend will offer more than a race. It will be a step back to a simpler time of racing.

This Friday and Saturday marks the return of the touring Golden Wheels cars. If the past is any indication, spectators may see cars that date back at least 50 years.

The Golden Wheels run regular races, but you won’t find the bumping and grinding that is present in other racing classes. Most of the Golden Wheels are original race cars from the 1940s.

Race fans can get their fix of tire rubbing and paint trading from the regular speedway classes.

Friday night is the midseason championships for Hobby Stocks. Compact Streets and Sportsman complete the program that begins with time trials at 6:30.

Saturday night, the Golden Wheels will be featured along with the Sportsman Tour, N.W. Mini-Supers and Columbia River Sprint Cars. Time trials are at 6.

SRP features mini-trucks

Three classes of cars will be in action on SRP’s half-mile oval, highlighted by the Mini Truck Summer Cup, a special race for compact trucks. Fever Fours and Hobby Stocks complete the program.

Saturday also brings another night of bracket drag racing. Gates for drags and stock cars open at 3 p.m., with racing at 7.

Sunday at SRP will be the fourth annual nostalgia drags, beginning at 1:30.

Northport’s big race nears

After three consecutive weeks of racing, the volunteers of the Northport Dirt Racing Association might need some time off.

That, however, won’t come until after next Sunday.

The countdown is down to one week for the Liberty 5,000, Northport International Raceway’s three-day July 4 weekend race.

Preregistration closed two weeks ago, but “we’re still accepting entries,” said NIDR president Carlene Wells. Wells said raceway rules easily allow asphalt cars to compete on dirt.

“For the $2,500 first-place money (in both Superstocks and Modifieds) we’re offering, it’s worth it to make the changes,” Wells said.

The weekend begins with practice next Friday. Time trials and qualifying heats are Saturday, and the 75-lap main events take place Sunday, July 5.

Other activities are scheduled over the weekend as Northport celebrates its centennial.
